Subject: Blue Jays @ Orioles
Due to having bats made of balsa wood the Jays continue to play one nailbiter after another but win more than we lose -- at least on the road. This week the two most talented teams in the A.L. East met in Baltimore, and we ran into the one team whose offense is massively underachieving as much as our own.... Game 1: A timely GIDP in the first inning meant that Dave Winfield's home run was only a 2-run shot instead of plating 3 or 4 runs. Winfield's solo homer in the 8th completed the scoring, as the old man accounted for 100% of the laughably inept Blue Jay offense today. Somehow, it was enough. Final score: 3-1. Curt Schilling tossed a complete game 7-hitter, as did Jack Morris (except for Tom Henke facing one batter for the final out). A Leo Gomez solo gopher in the 2nd provided Baltimore's only run. Robby Alomar tripled leading off the 3rd but in typical Toronto fashion he died there. ======================================================= Game 2: Juan Guzman pitched well for a rare change and made today's 2-0 first inning lead hold up for a 3-2 win. An even more jaw-dropping surprise was Duane Ward earning a SAVE! Ward did immediately let one of Guzman's runs score (what else is new?) and he got the tying run into scoring position in the 9th but fanned Orsulak & Biggio on 6 pitches to end it. Winfield tripled & homered, scored twice and drove in a pair as the rest of the TOA offense continued its record-setting feebleness. ======================================================= Game 3: That feebleness was fully evident today as Charles Nagy had a start that Cy Young would envy: 8 IP, 0 runs, 4 hits, 1 BB, *11* K's and not even 100 pitches were required to do it. Jays lose, 3-0. Toronto starter Tim Fortungo went the distance and deserved SOME kind of support. Failure to turn a DP cost us one run when naturally the next 2 batters came up with clutch 2-out singles. And then it was the attack of the surgical split cards one inning later when the O's came up with 2 beauties in a row including the all but impossible BP single. Winfield went 0 for 4 today, therefore we had no offense whatsoever. Alan |
