Subject: Reds @ Giants
This series was a perfect illustration of Cincy's lackluster underachieving season -- we dominated for two games, and then HAL's trusty scalpel sliced us to ribbons as the surgically precise split cards and dice rolls for our opponent just never stopped.... Game 1: Chris Hammond hit (double, walk, RBI) and pitched (9 IP, 10 baserunners, 1 run) his way to an easy win over Terry Mulholland and the Giants. The top of the Cincy lineup took the day off entirely (2 for 17) but Reggie Sanders and Joe Oliver continue to hit well and even Chris Sabo chipped in. Final score: 6-1. =================================================== Game 2: Tim Belcher (double, 2 RBI, 8 IP, 0 runs) out-did Hammond, pitching into the 9th and sharing a shutout with Rob Dibble. Final score: 5-0. Promoted to the third slot in the lineup, Oliver responded with his second home run of the series as once again the CIN offense was confined to just a few batters. =================================================== Game 3: And then it was confined to no batters (but Oliver had 2 more hits), as rookie starter Jim Pena held the Reds to just 1 earned run in 6.2 innings and got his first-ever win, while no-luck-whatsoever starter Kevin Gross choked away an early 4-2 lead. Final score: 9-4. Arsonist Norm Charlton (3 IP, 6 hits) was battered as badly as Gross but the contest had long been decided by that point. The Giants amassed 15 hits, 11 of them among the first 4 hitters in the lineup. =================================================== Game 4: What became just one more surgical nightmare for the Reds sure didn't start out that way. Bobby Ayala made his major league debut and had everybody fooled -- including HAL -- for several frames. Ayala had faced the minimum 12 batters through 4 innings and Cincy had a 1-0 lead even though we pulled the old strand-the-leadoff-triple trick in he 4th and should have been leading by at least 2. That LOB would turn out not to matter at all because the roof fell in immediately. After a leadoff double followed by a Canseco gopher in the 5th, HAL discovered that Ayala's 4-column isn't very good, so he rolled it four straight times. By the time Ayala was pronounced D.O.A. (and so were the Reds) 6 runs had scored, and Arsonist Greg Harris was then lit up just like Charlton had been yesterday. Final score: 8-2 as Bud Black cruised both before and after Ayala's 6-run dismemberment. Alan |
