Padres win 3 of 4 as there were 3 1 run games. Forgot to save game 1 so box and pac files included.
game 1: It took two batters to do what the Padres had done in the first 28 games of the year... have 2 runners caught stealing as the split cards were ugly for both teams. Reynolds walked and then got a 16 on his 1-15 sb attempt. Fernandez singled and then got a 19 on his 1-15 chance. Howard Johnson drew a 2 out walk in the bottom of the first and that would be the last base runner for either team until the bottom of the 4th. A single and walk started the inning but the Mets got a 19 on a 1-15 single and then a double play grounder ended the inning. In the top of the5th, Santiago got a 20 on his hr 1-18 chance and was stranded at second. In the bottom of the inning, the mets got single and double to start the inning but then a gbB got the runner at the plate, the pitcher bunted the runner to 2nd and then they missed the 1-15 single chance again. In the 6th, the Mets tried something different. The first 2 batters went down before Sheffield was handcuffed on a grounder. George Bell then drew the 2 on his bp homer chance and the Mets were up 2-0. In the 9th, Sheffield finally found a hit on his card (after getting 1-9 and 3-8 earlier) and the Padres had 2 runners on with 1 out. Young came on and struck out McGriff before Santiago got a split of 2. Too bad it was only single 1 and the Mets held on for a 2-1 win.
game 2: Fernandez had an rbi single and McGriff a bases loaded walk as SD jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third. Mets used that 2 out nobody on magic in the 4th to tie it. Single, walk single loaded the bases and Pecota lined a double to plate 2 but Strawberry was thrown out on a play at the plate (4 on a 1-2 chance). Bonilla had a 2 run 2 out double in the 5th to give the Mets the lead. Walters had a pinch rbi single in the 6th but was then picked off first to end the inning. Schofield's 1st error of the game led to a Sheffield sac fly (missed bp homer chance) and the game was tied after 7. In the 9th, Reynolds reached on Schofield's 2nd error of the game and stole second. Gerald Clark must have caught Cone off guard as Cone uncorked a wild one when Clark squared to bunt. Clark then singled in Reynolds. Maddux alternated outs and singles in the bottom of the 9th to get his 3rd save as the Padres won 5-4.
game 3: No drama in this one. Padres sent 8 to plate in the first and had a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Fernandez and Sheffield had rbi singles in the 2nd. Clark had a solo homer in the 5th and rbi single in the 6th. Gallagher had a 2 run double in that 4 run 6th and Hurst helped himself with an rbi single in the 7th for an 11-0 lead. The Mets were so bad in this one, that they had made 3 errors before their first hit in the 4th inning. The Mets caught their only "luck" of the game when Hurst left with 1 out in the 8th. Rodriguez allowed a pair of 6-6 successful split singles before a strikeout. The Mets avoided the shutout when Gallagher (a 2 replacing Gwynn's 1 for usage reasons) allowed an x play single. Before those 3 hits, the Mets line was 0-4-4.
game 4: A double bullpen meltdown nearly costs the Padres this one. Gwynn's rbi single in the first gave the Padres the early lead. In the 3rd the first 2 Padres went down before single walk walk loaded them. Martinez struck out on a 5-7 roll (5-8 to 5-10 would have produced at least 1 run). In the bottom of the 3rd, Oberkfell's error loaded the bases for the Mets but Benes worked out of that jam. In the 6th, 3 singles to start the inning loaded the bases for the Mets. After an out, Schofield hit a comebacker to the mound, but Benes Fernandez couldn't turn the dp and the game was tied. In the 8th, Curtis singled, stole second and scored on a Fernandez single to put the Padres back on top. Habyan came on in the 9th and much like Rodriguez in the last game, ran into immediate trouble. 6-8 rolls by the first 2 hitters put 2 on. A ground out moved them up and Bonilla tied it with a sac fly. In the 12th, Reynolds had a 2 run double to put the Padres up 4-2. Maddux came on and match his buddies Rodriguez and Habyan by allowing the first 2 runners to reach. At least this time they were both on the hitters card. Maddux got a strike out and flyout before Pecota found the 4 column for a single. That was the first run Maddux has allowed all season. He recovered to get Sasser to pop out to get his 2nd save of the series and 4th of the year.
