Subject: Chicago @ Pittsburgh

The Pirates' bats were too much for the Cubs- especially Chicago's pen.  Pittsburgh took 3 tight games of 4 total contests at 3RS.

G1 was probably the most interesting game in the series.  Each team scored in the same two innings.  However, only one of those innings was in the regulation 9 innings.  In the 4th, Bip Roberts singled and stole 2nd in the leadoff spot.  One out later Glenallen Hill singled home Roberts for a shortlived 1-0 Cubs lead.  In the bottom of the 4th, Pittsburgh answered when Mike Lavalliere lifted a sac fly after Pittsburgh had gotten runners to 1st and 3rd with one out.  With both Frank Castillo (6 2 1 1 3 2) and Danny Jackson (6 1/3 4 1 1 2 5) on their games, the teams' bullpens took over and continued to put up zeroes until the 15th.  In his 2nd inning of work (and as the Pirates' 5th pitcher in the game), Roger Mason allowed the Cubs to re-take the lead.  After Andre Dawson's single was erased by a Hill double play grounder, 1B Mark Grace lofted his 5th homer of the early portion of the season already.  Chicago's Bob Scanlan also attempted to get through his 2nd inning in the bottom of the 16th.  The Pirates would not let that happen as Andy Van Slyke led off with a triple and Paul Sorrento walked before Don Slaught lifted a sac fly.  It appeared we would play on with a 2-2 tie when Bob Scanlon got Jay Bell to pop up for the 2nd out after Charlie Hayes had singled Sorrento to 2nd base.  However, PH Gary Redus would be the hero on this cinco de Mayo day.  He hit a long 3-run HR to score Sorrento and Hayes and give Pittsburgh a 5-2 win in 16 innnings.  Hill and Van Slyke led their respective teams with 3 hits apiece in this marathon.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 2, 16 innings
WP- Mason 1-0, LP- Scanlan 0-1
HR- Grace (5), Redus (1)

G2 was the second consecutive extra inning win for the Buccos.  This time the Cubs' bullpen blew a 6th inning 4-1 lead and Pittsburgh came all the way back to score on a GW suicide squeeze by Jay Bell which scored Sorrento with the winning tally in the 10th.  Both teams had 11 hits and 10 LOB, but the Pirates again proved able to win the close one.  Of course it helped that the Pirates bullpen pitched 4 1/3 innings and only allowed 1 run while Chicago's arsonists allowed 4 runs in their collective 4 1/3 IP.  Bell's 2-for-3 day with the GW RBI lifted his season average to .206 for Pittsburgh

Final Score: Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 4, 10 innings
WP- Belinda 1-1, Slocumb 0-1
HR- none

G3 saw the Cubs get off to a fast start against an rapidly-aging Don Robinson.  Chicago notched 5 runs in the first before Robinson could get the 3rd out, and the Pirates bullpen tried to manage the game from there, but that would be all the runs the Cubs would really need.  Again Chicago got 11 hits, but this time they added 5 walks to put pressure on Pittsburgh from start-to-end.  Four Cubs (Bip Roberts, Donnie Hill, Ryne Sandberg, and Grace) had 2 hits, but no Pirate had more than 1 safety.  Chicago had managed to pull back to .500 with one game left in the series.

Final Score: Chicago 8, Pittsburgh 4
WP- Harnisch 4-2, LP- Robinson 0-3
HR- Incaviglia (3)

G4 In the finale, the game devolved into a slugfest where the score changed hands 5 times by the end.  For the third straight game, Chicago's hitters teed off on Pittsburgh's pitchers, but this time Pittsburgh was again just slightly more productive.  Although the Cubs' held an 8-6 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th, Van Slyke and Slaught each doubled home runs off nominal closer Bob Scanlan to tie the game at 8-8.  Bip Roberts put the Cubs right back in front in the 10th when he doubled home Donnie Hill with Chicago's 9th run.  Pittsburgh matched that score with a 2-out rally sparked by a walk to Merced and a subsequent single by reliever Stan Belinda.  Evidently Doug Dascenzo was so shaken by this rare occurrence that he botched picking up the ball and Merced ended up scoring all the way from first base.  In the 11th, Belinda was pumped with his hitting contribution and put down Chicago 1-2-3.  In the bottom of the 11th, Glenallen Hill dropped Sorrento's flyball, and as he has done so many times in real life, Don Slaught singled home Hill to end the contest and give Pittsburgh the series.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 10, Chicago 9
WP- Belinda 2-1, LP- Slocumb 0-2
HR- Huson (3)
