Subject: Chicago @ LA

A week after the Cubs lost 3 extra inning games in Pittsburgh, Chicago fares much better with 2 more extra inning games in Dodger Stadium.

G1 In an opening game in which neither starter (Rich Delucia or former Cub Mike Harkey) was effective, the Cubs and Dodgers were tied, 6-6, after 6 innings as both teams had turned to their bullpens.  As has been the case for much of the year, the Cubs had the less-effective relief staff. Chicago allowed a run in the 7th on Carlos Hernandez's 1-out RBI single and one more in the eighth when a Scott Servais throwing error set up an Eric Karros 1-out RBI single.  As usual, the Dodgers pen was flawless- pitching 4 1/3 one-hit scoreless innings. Doug Dascenso and Dan led the visitors with 2 hits apiece while 5 different Dodgers (Karros, Sojo, Howard, Hernandez, and Piazza,  Grace, Carlos Hernaez, and

Final Score: LA 8, Chicago 6
WP- Osuna 1-1, LP- Assenmach 2-1, SV- Howell (9)
HR- Grace (6), L.Sojo (4), H.Rodriguez (1)

G2 In a preview of the finale, Chicago came up with one big outburst in extra innings to win this one.  However, until then, nothing in this game was similar to the game that would could conclude the series.  In this game Frank Castillo (7 3 0 0 1 3) and Mark Langston (7 3 0 0 1 5) put up almost identitical lines through 7 innings.  When Doug Dascenzo stroked a 1-out double in the 8th, I went to the bench for PH Andre Dawson.  However, a very effective Al Osuna got both Dawson and Ryne Sandberg to ground out to end the inning.  The next time a runner would get to scoring position was the 11th inning.  Mike Piazza accepted a 1-out walk and PR Curtis Wilkerson promptly stole 2nd base.  Thomas Howard grounded out which moved Wilkerson to 3rd base, but Omar Vizquel rolled the 3-6 clutch single roll which resulted in an inning-ending pop up instead of the GW single it would have otherwise been.  Chicago immediately took advantage of this break.  In the 12th short AB pickups Julio Peguero and Russ McGinnis walked to start the inning.  After an out was recorded Sammy Sosa rolled another 3-6 which was HR 1-16, TR 17-20.  Sosa grabbed the 16 split, and the Cubs were up, 3-0.  Chicago's 5th pitcher, Bob Scanlan, then retired 3 of the 4 Dodger hitters he faced in the bottom of the 12th to seal the shutout win. Dascenzo's 2 hits led the Cubs lineup while Brett Butler and Eric Karros combined for all 4 of LA's hits.

Final Score: Chicago 3, Los Angeles 0, 12 innings
WP- C.Jones 2-0, LP- Bones 1-3, Scanlan (10)
HR- Sosa (2)

G3 After a tremendous pitching matchup on the middle game, the finale reverted into a scoring frenzy.  Los Angeles built a 9-4 lead after 6 innings, largely on the strength of 2-run homers by 3rd and 4th place hitters Karros and Luis Sojo.  They also knocked out Cubs' starter Mike Morgan in the first inning without Chicago's ace being able to retire a batter, but this time it would be the Dodger bullpen that would falter.  In the 7th, Sosa was again a big factor when his 2-run single keyed a 4-run inning to make the score, 9-8, in favor of LA.   Jim Corsi got the final out of the 7th, but he gave up the tying run in the 8th when PH Dwight Smith stroked a single with the bases loaded to score Dascenzo.  Once again, the game headed to extra innings.  However, instead of a 3-run outburst, this time Chicago sent 13 men to the plate and scored 8 runs in the 11th off of Tim Crews, Osuna, and Pedro Astacio.  Mark Grace had a double and a single in the inning for 2 of the Cubs' 7 hits.  In the finale, Sandberg and McGinnis each stroked 3 hits to lead the Cubs' 18-hit attack (which included a season-high 13 walks!!!), and Sojo and Howard had 3 hits apiece for the Dodgers.

Final Score: Chicago 17, Los Angeles 9, 11 innings
WP- Assenmacher 3-1, LP- Crews 1-2
HR- Karros (3), Sojo (5)
