Subject: Reds & Mets

The Reds can sympathize with what the Mets are going through this year because the 1993 Reds are going to look at lot like the 1992 Mets; and with Cincy's usual luck it could easily be a 120-loss season.  This week two teams with widely divergent levels of talent met in New York for an experiment. What happens when a team with last-place talent meets a team with first-place talent and league-worst luck?  Let's find out....

Game 1: New York's Wally Whitehurst made his first start of 1992 today; Cincy's Jose Rijo made his 8th.  The two pitchers entered today's contest with an equal number of wins: zero.  That's right, Cincy's ace starter has made it to week #6 still looking for win #1.

Rijo did a couple of smart things today and finally attained a tiny morsel of success: he got 2 hits and drove in a pair of runs, not relying on the clutch chokers in the lineup to help much; and he tossed a complete game, avoiding the disaster that is typically the Cincinnati bullpen (examples follow).

He also survived some first inning surgery after 2 outs and nobody on base (4-column single, 4-column single, 4-column single, 4-column single).  Rijo then proceeded to face just the minimum 24 batters over the next 8 frames (!).  Rijo scattered 5 hits (1 after the first inning), walked nobody and fanned 10.  Final score 7-2.

=======================================================

Game 2: NYN scrap heap pickup Kyle Abbott came into the series with more wins than Jose Rijo, and pitched as if he was determined to maintain that lead.  But Cincy's Greg Swindell was even better and took a 2-0 lead into the 6th when HAL suddenly discovered his 6 column.  Unlike Rijo, Swindell did not survive.

The 2-0 lead was a 4-2 deficit in the 9th, when the Reds caught a rare break: with 2 runners in scoring position Paul O'Neill plated both runs with a sac fly thanks to an error by center fielder Ryan Thompson, and the game was tied.

Teams are rarely permitted to out-choke the Reds, and today would be no exception to that rule.

Rob Dibble and his 0.69 ERA took the mound for the bottom of the ninth and merely allowed 3 singles, 2 SB and a walk.  Lacking room for all 4 runners on the bases, one had to score.  Reds lose, 5-4.

=======================================================

Game 3: The Reds continued to get solid starting pitching, so we had to find another method by which to choke.  Here's one way: getting just 4 hits in 11 innings, ruining Chris Hammond's 8 very effective innings (5 hits, 1 walk, 0 runs).

It was the one batter Hammond faced in the 9th that proved costly, as Dave Hollins led off with a fortuitous split-card triple, and he scored when HAL had reliever Greg Harris's first pitch go to the backstop; not waiting for the RBI was a nice touch, since the Mets were in fact retired without another hit.

Having been held to 2 hits in 10 innings, the Reds exploded for 2 hits in the 11th but one was gunned at the plate (not for the first time in the series).  Scoring just once wouldn't have made a difference anyway; with 2 outs in the bottom of the inning, Harris choked up the 2-run game-losing gopher to Todd Hundley.  Final score: 3-1, as the Reds conclude yet another week of proving that abysmal luck more than negates superior talent.
