Subject: Blue Jays @ A's
Odd that a team with Toronto's talent can't break .500 in our own ballpark, but at least we continue to (narrowly) succeed on the road. There was only one 1-run decision in this series, and it was a rare loss for the Blue Jays who are now 12-4 in those games.... Game 1: This contest illustrates the reason why the Jays play so many close games, even though this wasn't a 1-run game. Toronto had leads of 7-0 and 9-2 today, then Bobby Witt imploded against his real-life teammates and we eked out a 9-6 win thanks to 14 hits and 25 total bases. Mike Moore took the loss for Oakland and Rickey Henderson homered twice and doubled & drove in 3 runs. ================================================ Game 2: By scoring 9 times in the opener, you just had to know that the Jays' ultra-talented but massively underachieving offense would be all used up, and it was. But Oakland didn't fare much better than their visitors at the plate. For the second time in his past 4 starts, Jack Morris tossed 9 innings (8 hits, 1 run) -- and got no decision. Billy Ripken's bases-loaded single in the 4th gave Oakland a 1-0 lead and the Jays tied it with a pair of doubles in the 7th, at which point the game was only half over. Oakland's bullpen provided 8.1 scoreless relief innings, and Toronto almost did the same. Duane Ward tossed 5 scoreless innings (!), walking nobody and fanning 8. The ace reliever with the superlative card now finally has an ERA a tick below 5.0. Toronto got 2 RISP with just one out in the 10th, and naturally failed to score. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 15th Jesse Orosco choked up the game-losing single to Harold Baines which plated Henderson from second. Final score: 2-1. ================================================ Game 3: Now the Oakland offense really was almost used up. Frank Viola had a 2-0 lead but was dodging numerous Blue Jay bullets when his luck finally ran out in the 6th and the Jays actually delivered a couple of hits with runners in scoring position. Juan Guzman registered a complete game 4-hitter and got the outcome he deserved -- a 4-2 win. Our ace starter finally has an ERA (4.89) almost as good as Duane Ward's! Guzman walked just one and struck out 9 A's, in a contest that never should have been close at all (LOB: TOA - 9, OAA - 1). ================================================ Game 4: Tim "Secret Weapon" Fortugno took a no-hitter into the 7th inning before allowing a near-impossible BP single. Since he was pitching so well, of course the Blue Jays offense was almost totally inert and Fortugno had just a 1-0 lead, which was negated by that cheap single thanks to its being surrounded by 3 walks. So there's another very well pitched no decision. Fortunately, the Jays retaliated immediately with back-to-back triples from Livingstone and Carter to lead off the 8th and we somehow managed to not strand Carter either. Carter's 3-run homer in the 9th made the game look like it had never been the nailbiter that it was. Final score: 6-1. Oakland's only other hit was another low-probability split card single off of winning pitcher Mike Timlin, who was in the right place when we scored those 5 late runs. Over the last 2 games the A's LOBbed only 4 runners; the series totals were Toronto 39, Oakland 24. Joe Carter had a very Carter-like series; though he made just 5 hits in 21 AB, all 5 were extra-base hits (2 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR) and he was right in the middle of what little offense we produced (5 R, 8 RBI).
