Game 1 Expos........... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 7 1 Cubs............ 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 0 - 3 8 0 Harnisch and Scanlan combine to shut out the Expos. Jay Bell has a double, triple and RBI to give the Cubs just enough to win it.
Game 2 Expos........... 0 0 0 0 1 7 0 0 0 - 8 12 2 Cubs............ 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 9 0 Expos collect 12 hits, 7 of them in the top of the 6th (along with 4 walks). The 7-run inning is enough.
Game 3 Expos........... 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 2 8 0 Cubs............ 0 0 0 1 3 0 0 0 - 4 8 1 Dennis Martinez is given a 2-0 lead but he is not up to the task and the Expo offense (other than the 7-run inning in game 2) are sluggish. Cubs have a 3-run 5th fueled by Kelly Downs bunt single (pitcher bunt singles being the single most overblown play in Strat…rant over). Martinez falls to 1-5 while Downs gets his first win of ’92. Scanlan notches save #11.
Game 4 Expos........... 1 0 2 1 0 0 0 0 2 1 - 7 12 0 Cubs............ 0 0 1 0 4 0 0 1 0 0 - 6 13 2 A real barnburner this one. Cubs lead 6-4 going into the ninth on the strength of a Glenallen Hill grand slam home run (4) but squandered some opportunities on the base paths. Bob Scanlan looking for his 3rd save of the series comes in to pitch the ninth and immediately gives up a lead off double to Darren Lewis. Bagwell grounds out sending Lewis to third. Larry Walker grounds the ball down to Mark Grace who inexplicably tries to nail Lewis who is sent home trying to score. (Can’t remember the split, thought it might have been safe to 12 but does it really matter?). Lewis is safe on the fielder’s choice and Walker is now at first representing the tying run with one out. Baerga singles Walker to third. Alou hits for Cianfrocco and grounds the ball to short. The Cubs electing to try for a double play don’t get it and Alou beats the throw to first and Walker scores tying the game. Scanlon escapes without further damage. Cubs go down in order in their half of the ninth and the Expos go to back to work in the tenth with Scanlon still pitching. Last batter on the Expo bench John Vander Wal pinch hits and reaches on Rey Sanchez’s second error of the game (both were costly). Karkovice bunts Vander Wal over and Grissom singles home Vander Wal for the margin of victory. The Expos say “thank you very much” to HAL for the game 4 win and run to catch the bus to the airport happy to escape Chicago with a split.
