Subject: BAA @ TEA Week 7 (plus Week 8 CM)

Despite being outscored 17-14, the Rangers win three of four in Arlington.

Game 1: TEA 9, BAA 3

The Orioles got three runs in a first-inning rally off Texas starter Kevin Brown; the highlight was Leo Gomez’s two-run triple.  (Actual triples for Gomez in 1992: 0.)  The lead was short-lived, as Charles Nagy yielded back-to-back-to-back homers by Albert Belle, Rafael Palmeiro, and Juan Gonzalez in the bottom of the inning for a 3-3 tie.  The Rangers took a 5-3 lead in the second on an RBI single by Lance Johnson and a passed ball by Chris Hoiles. That score stood until the bottom of the eighth, when Alan Mills relived Nagy and opened the floodgates for four more Rangers runs.  Brown went the distance for the win.

Game 2: TEA 2, BAA 1

Texas starter Jose Guzman came out on the winning end in a pitching duel against Mike Mussina. Baltimore took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd thanks in part to an errant throw by Ivan Rodriguez on a Brady Anderson steal.  Another homer by Belle tied the game 1-1 in the 4th, and the Rangers went ahead 2-1 in the 5th on a Kevin Reimer double.  Guzman and reliever Kenny Rogers made the lead hold up, as the Orioles struck out 12 times and left seven runners on base.  Mussina, who deserved better, went the distance for the loss, allowing just five hits and a walk.

Game 3: BAA 11, TEA 0

Baltimore again struck first, as Anderson led off the game with a double off Nolan Ryan and scored on a Cal Ripken single.  Candy Maldonado’s three-run homer made it 4-0 in the 2nd.  The O’s struck paydirt with 4 more runs in the 4th, capped by a Craig Biggio double that sent Ryan to the showers.  Baltimore padded the lead to 11-0 in the 5th as Maldonado doubled in two more runs and scored on a Rene Gonzales error.  Meanwhile, Ben McDonald threw a complete game five-hit shutout, ending the game with a flourish by striking out the side in the bottom of the 9th

Game 4: TEA 3, BAA 2

This time the Rangers scored first, on – what else? – a solo homer by Belle in the first inning.  That was one of only two hits Curt Schilling allowed in the first seven innings, but he gave up four hits and two runs in the 8th.  Texas starter Brian Bohanon, who entered the game with a 6.75 ERA, threw eight shutout innings and got the win when Texas ended a 9th inning Orioles rally with their fourth double play of the game.
