Subject: Blue Jays @ Royals

These two squads are worlds apart in talent, but one thing they have in common is doing well in close games (at least they Jays used to have that trait).  So of course we played nothing but close games in a series that should have tended towards several blowouts....

Game 1: The offenses were apparently efficient today, scoring 9 times and stranding only 6 runners combined.  But it was a runner who neither scored nor was LOBbed which decided the outcome -- the one for Toronto who was gunned at the plate in the 9th on one of our routinely abysmal baserunning split card draws.  Final score: 5-4, as TOA starter Tim Fortugno's luck continues to be uniformly miserable.  They key blow was a timely 3-run gopher by Wally World in the 4th with (what else?) 2 outs.

KCA starter Juan Berenguer, against whom lefties should hit about .500, fared remarkably (but unsurprisingly) well against Toronto's lefty laden lineup.

===============================================

Game 2: Bobby Witt was cruising along with a 3-1 lead in the 7th when he allowed not one but two low-probability fortuitous split card gophers to sluggers Mariano Duncan and Jim Eisenreich which tied the contest.  Tom Henke relieved the suddenly-dismembered hurler and registered 2.1 scoreless innings and earned the win when Robby Alomar came up with an RBI triple in the 9th which restored our lead.  Final score: 4-3.

Toronto outhit Kansas City 11-5 but Witt helped balance the baserunner scales by issuing 5 free passes and the TOA offense helped keep things close by generously taking little advantage of those hits.

===============================================

Game 3: The final score may not reflect it but you can't have a game much closer than this.  Neither team scored for the first THIRTEEN innings as Luckless Charlie Leibrandt (3.31 ERA now) tossed 9 scoreless frames and permitted a whopping 3 baserunners -- and still seeks his first win of 1992 merely 8 weeks and 9 starts into the 1992 season.

Finally in the 14th inning the Jays loaded the bases with nobody out.  The next batter naturally struck out, as is Blue jay policy, and Joe Carter would gladly have done the same but Tom Gordon nailed him with a pitch instead and forced in the winning run.  That broke the dike and John Olerud followed with a slender 1-19 chance at a Grand Slam -- and didn't miss it!  Final score: 5-0.

Bob MacDonald, just recalled from the minors to aid Toronto's massively overworked bullpen, pitched a successful bottom of the 14th but did not qualify for a save.

===============================================

Game 4: Jack Morris, whose specialty lately has been the nine inning no-decision, would have done it again except he made the mistake of allowing 1 run in 8 innings while a the Blue Jay batters went back to not being able to purchase a break at any price.  Final score: 1-0, that run coming in the 4th inning on, naturally, a 2-out clutch hit.

Scrub starter Hipolito Pichardo combined with wildly ineffective (6.0 ERA until today) reliever Mitch Williams and closer Jeff Montgomery to limit the eternally underachieving Toronto offense to 4 singles, as we prepare to wave to the Orioles as they blow past us at 100 mph while we sputter along stuck in low gear.

Alan
