may 22 Sam McDowell took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Sportsman's Park where the New York AL Yankees beat the struggling St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 2 to 0. McDowell(4-3) was in control of the game from the outset. He surrendered only 4 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.50 to 2.16. The left-handed McDowell had his no-hit bid broken up by Tim McCarver who singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning. Curt Simmons(2-4) took the loss. He gave up only 3 hits and no walks in 6 innings. With this win, New York AL has a 23-27 record. They have been 3-7 lately. St. Louis' manager was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.' The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. St. Louis was victorious in the 12th inning. After two were out Julian Javier lined a base-hit. Curt Flood came next and he smacked a single. Gates Brown then singled giving St. Louis the victory as 40,557 happy fans celebrated wildly. New York AL had 12 hits in the game while St. Louis had 8, but St. Louis had the more timely hits. Barney Schultz(1-2) got the win allowing no runs in 3 innings. Ralph Terry(1-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. With this win, St. Louis has a 19-32 record. They have been 3-7 lately.
