Subject: Chicago @ Cincinnati

Chicago and Cincinnati get together for 3 games that weren't nearly as close as they seemed to be.

G1 For the first 5 innings, this was an excellent pitched game by both starters.  Despite Jose Rijo (7 1/3 5 1 0 1 6) being down 1-0, the run he allowed in the 5th inning was on a passed ball that wouldn't have scored otherwise.  Meanwhile spot starter Calvin Jones (6 2/3 2 3 3 5 4) made his first start of the year for Chicago and had allowed only 2 baserunners through 5 innings while maintaining a 1-0 lead.  In the 6th, the Reds broke through. With a Bill Doran on base with 2 outs, John Kruk put Cincinnati in front with a 2-run ball park homer off of Jones' card.  Although Jones got out of the 6th, he fell apart in the 7th when he loaded the bases on walks with no outs.  The Cubs' bullpen took over and limited the damage to 1 run, but couldn't hold the fort the next inning when Cincinnati added 2 insurance runs on Barry Larkin's 2-run single.

The Reds were out-hit 7-4, but Cincinnati's 6 walks received provided the difference.  As a side note, Dwight Smith reached base on a catcher's interference leading off the 2nd inning.  I don't remember the Cubs being involved with a catcher's interference since I started managing the club in 1987.  I looked through the team stats and am unable to find whether that's a stat that's able to be kept historically.

Final Score: Cincinnati 5, Chicago 1
WP- Rijo 4-5, LP- C.Jones 2-1
HR- Kruk (4)

G2 It looked like Cincinnati was on its way to a 2nd straight win after the Reds scored in each of the first 3 innings to make the score, 3-2, through 4 innings.  This time Chicago was able to rise up off the mat in the 5th when Mark Grace rolled a 5-2 BP 3-run homer to put the Cubs up, 5-3.  After Mike Morgan (6 7 3 3 1 3) departed, Cincinnati got within a run on Hal Morris's RBI triple, but as the tying run, he was stranded at 3B when Kruk struck out and Darrin Jackson lined out on a BP 1B chance.  The Cubs' bullpen toughened from that point on, and Chicago added 2 insurance runs on Dawson's solo home run and Doug Dascenzo's RBI double- both in the 8th inning.   The stats in this game were reversed from G1 as Cincinnati outhit Chicago 10-7, but Chicago drew 6 walks which generously supplemented its rallies.  Grace's 3-for-4 game led Chicago while 3 hitters (Hal Morris, Jackson, and Barry Larkin went 2-for-4 for the Reds.

Final Score: Chicago 7, Cincinnati 4
WP- Morgan 7-3, LP- Belcher 9-2, SV- Scanlan (15)
HR- D.Jackson (5), Grace (8), Dawson (8)

G3 Heading into the rubber game, Cubs' starter Pete Harnisch (5 4 1 1 0 2) easily led the Major Leagues with almost 7 runs/game of support.  Harnisch didn't receive 7 runs this time, but when OF Glenallen Hill tagged Reds' hurler Greg Swindell (8 9 4 4 4 7) with a 3-run shot in the 6th, the Cubs opened up a 4-1 lead. Due to Chicago's stellar pitching by the bullpen over the last 4 innings, the game never seemed to be in jeopardy again.  In this game, the advantage in hits matched the margin in runs as Chicago held the advantage, 10-6.  The Cubs also received all 5 walks in the contest.  Three players had 2 hits in the final game- Sammy Sosa, Bip Roberts, and Scott Fletcher.

Final Score: Chicago 5, Cincinnati 1
WP- Harnisch 9-4, LP- Swindell 3-7
HR- D.Jackson (6), G.Hill (5)
