Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox
A series that went the way it's supposed to, but in one unfortunate case it also went exactly as expected.... Game 1: Staff aces Juan Guzman & Roger Clemens hooked up and did not disappoint, the contest remaining scoreless through 6 innings mainly thanks to our series-long penchant for hitting into timely DPs (6 in 3 games). But three hits and a walk finally plated a pair for the Jays in the 7th and Joe Carter's 2-run homer off of Tom Edens sealed it up in the 8th. Guzman waited until 2 were out in the BOA 8th before allowing his first legitimate hit of the day; the 2 previous singles were both blown-x plays by SS Jose Vizcaino, the first of which still resulted in an out via the freak play chart. Boston broke Guzman's shutout in the 9th via -- picture this -- a Mo Vaughn triple, which was followed by a groundout. Final score: 4-1. ========================================================== Game 2: Todd Stottlemyre's season has been uniformly luckless, and nothing that happened today changes that one iota. His day turned ugly almost immediately when HAL got super-surgical in the Boston 3rd. See if you can spot any pattern here: 6-column error, 6-column double, 6-column double, 6-column walk, 6-column double, and then for a change HAL found the lone hit in his 5 column. All of the damage occurred, of course, after 2 outs and all 4 runs were unearned. Two innings later a walk and a gopher both from -- guess where? -- the 6 column, finished off the unluckiest pitcher in the majors. Meanwhile Red Sox starter Chris Haney, who entered today's game with the same 0-1 record as Stottlemyre (in 8 fewer starts) but an ERA over twice as high, pitched brilliantly against the underachievingest offense anywhere. Final score: 8-1. ========================================================== Game 3: Although we minimized today's scoring via every weapon in our arsenal (GIDP, LOB, pickoffs) today's lefty starter for Boston didn't fare nearly as well. The Jays banged out 15 hits including 5 doubles but only slowly pulled away for a 7-2 win over Bob Ojeda. The score was still a very close 3-1 after 6 innings when back-to-back-to-back doubles in the TOA 7th helped put 4 runs on the board and gave Bobby Witt some well-deserved (but unnecessary) breathing room. Witt scattered 9 hits in his complete-game effort and walked only 3. Zoid catcher Eric Wedge was just inserted into the Boston lineup for this series and unsurprisingly came up with a pair of gophers against the Jays while using up nearly 20% of his season's allotment of at bats.
