In case any doubt somehow remained, the unluckiest team in the majors (it's not even close, now that the Orioles' results are vastly improved) goes out and proves it again, both at home and on the road....

Game 1: HAL has treated Tim Pugh brutally since he had the nerve to make his major league debut, and today Pugh was torched for 10 hits and 6 runs in less than 4 innings.  The Cincy offense couldn't buy a break as usual against Chuck Finley, but did mount a miniature comeback in the 5th, cutting the Atlanta lead to 6-2 before reliever Steve Foster gave half of the comeback right back.

Finally in the 8th, our powerful offense showed up in the form of getting hit by a pitch, reaching on an error, drawing a walk and hitting a sac fly.  A handful of weak singles were mixed in there too, and it was good for 5 runs and a miraculous 7-7 tie all of a sudden.

So of course Rob Dibble wasted no time whatsoever in choking that away, via a 2-out, 2-run single on that legendary hit-producing roll of 5-2.  Reds lose, 9-7.

===============================================

Game 2: At that point, the Reds got the message and stopped even trying to compete.  Luckless Kevin Gross took the mound today and did what comes naturally, despite his decent card: 4 IP, 12 baserunners, 5 scored.  Greg Harris provided 4 innings of pointlessly solid relief but the offense waited until the 9th inning to wake from its coma, producing 3 runs mainly due to Willie Greene's pinch-homer.

Two Cincy errors produced 2 unearned runs.  Guess how much we lost by?  That's right.  Final score: 6-4.

===============================================

Game 3: Bobby Ayala's second career start went marginally better than his first one, but the outcome was no different.  No sooner had the Reds clawed back to get a 2-2 tie than HAL clamped down and ensured no chance of the Reds winning this one.  From the 6th inning on, Braves' pitchers only had to face 1 batter over the minimum and Ayala was nicked by several incidents of minor surgery.  Final score: 4-2.

===============================================

Game 4: Greg Swindell got -- and very much needed -- the aid of 4 DPs to eke out a 7-3 win and narrowly avert the sweep.  Swindell was battered all over the park while the Reds managed only 4 hits in 7 innings off ATN starter John Smoltz -- but scored 6 runs against him anyway thanks to 4 walks and 2 home runs.

The Reds were outhit 11-7 but still had as many baserunners (and LOB) as the Braves; but without those DPs it would surely have been yet another untimely defeat.

Alan
