Subject: Blue Jays @ Mariners

Good thing that the Blue Jays are starting to play well at home because our luck on the road is typically poor (winning just 2 of our last 6 road series) and this week it was even worse than typical.  We pretty much had just one good inning and the M's had the other 35, as the Jays could not purchase an easy BP hit despite infinite opportunities (and the M's showing us how to do it, time after time) and Seattle's Gang of Threes in the infield played better defense than the 1970 Orioles....

Game 1: Dave Stieb finally made his 1992 season debut and proved that he still isn't ready.  The Jays did score 3 early runs for him and would put 6 on the board in all, but it wasn't nearly enough to offset Stieb's disastrous outing (5 IP, 14 baserunners, 8 runs) as HAL laser-beamed in on his walks and hits (some challenge), particularly clutch hits.  Final score: 8-6.

Seattle got 16 baserunners today, LOBbed only 4.

=======================================================

Game 2: Charlie Leibrandt returned to his customary form -- pitch well, fail to win.  He erased Toronto's 2-1 lead via a 2-out BPHR in the bottom of the 8th and was yanked in favor of Tom Henke.

SEA starter Trevor Wilson pitched into the 9th but loaded the bases with 1 out.  Two Seattle relievers were greeted with hits, and our one good inning of the series got back the lead and made a winner out of Henke.  Final score: 7-2.

=======================================================

Game 3: And now back to our regularly scheduled misery.  For a hit-an-inning pitcher, Seattle's Dave Fleming has an incredibly good card and we must have found every out on it.  Repeatedly.  For a less than a hit-an-inning pitcher, Toronto's Jack Morris has an incredibly mediocre card and the M's found every hit (and walk) on it.  Repeatedly.

Both starters tossed complete games, the one by Morris occurring solely for the purpose of giving the bullpen a day off, as the contest was over by the third inning.  Final score: 7-1.  The massively underachieving Toronto offense never had a chance today, as 7 of the 9 starters brought in batting averages under .250.  Not that there's anything unusual about that for the '92 Jays.

Both starters exited the game with identical 3.09 ERAs (after Morris's dismemberment), but their won-loss records are not quite so evenly matched.

=======================================================

Game 4: Tim Fortugno, Toronto's most luckless starter -- and on the Blue Jays, there's quite a battle for that "honor" -- pitched decently (7.1 IP, 11 baserunners, 10 K's) but once again the clutch hits went only one way.  As did all the NON-clutch hits.

What other team could be held to 2 hits and still rack up double-digits in LOB?  Randy Johnson and a cast of a thousand relievers held the ridiculously inept Toronto offense to 2 hits but issued 11 free passes despite no reason whatsoever to pitch carefully.  Final score: 4-2.

RJ walked 4 in the first and gave us an early 1-0 lead but it was all downhill from there.

Alan
