Chicago hoped to keep the momentum going from their series win vs. the 1st place Padres, but settled for a split against arch-rival St.Louis. G1 Pete Harnisch (9 5 0 0 1 7) did it all in the opener except sell programs between innings. The solid RH'er picked up his 12th win at the midway point of the season by shutting out the Cardinals on 5 singles. St.Louis got runners to 3rd base in each of the first 2 innings, but that would be as close as they would get to scoring until they left a runner on 3rd in the 8th. In addition, Harnisch raised his average to .095 by going 2-for-4 with a double and also scored the second run of the game. The Cubs
struck 14 hits, but left 8 runners while hitting into 2 double plays. Alex Arias led five Cubs with multiple hits with a 3-for-4 effort. Ozzie Smith was 3-for-4 for the Cardinals. Final Score: Chicago 3, St.Louis 0 WP- Harnisch 12-5, LP- Tewksbury 6-6 HR- G.Hill (9) G2 Although Harnisch has been the Cubs' winningest pitcher in 1992, Mike Morgan (2 1/3 5 4 4 3 1) has been the best and most consistent Chicago hurler. However, in this series, the Cardinals' lineup did major surgery on Morgan, and I had to get him out of there. Fortunately, after Harnisch's complete game, my entire bullpen was available, but walks persisted as all 4 relievers issued free passes, and St.Louis drew 9 walks altogether. Gregg Jefferies (3-for-5) and Bernard Gilkey (2 doubles) each drove home 2 runs for the Cards. C Rick Wilkins went 2-for-4 with a HR and 2 RBI for Chicago. Final Score: St.Louis 6, Chicago 3 WP- Olivares 10-5, LP- Morgan 10-4, SV- L.Smith (15) HR- Wilkins (4) G3 In the 3rd game both teams got off to
fast starts as the score was tied, 3-3 after 3 innings. When Pete O'Brien tripled with 2 outs in the 4th and scored on Tom Pagnozzi's subsequent RBI single, it looked like a 4-3 lead may hold up as the final score. However, Chicago rallied in the 9th inning. Mark Grace led off with a single and was replaced as a PR by Bip Roberts. Andre Dawson followed with a single to RF that Felix Jose kicked. By the time the runners stopped running, Roberts was in the dugout with the 4th run/tying run, and Dawson was puffing on 3B. Mike Perez came on for Rheal Cormier (8 7 4 3 1 7) to get PH Doug Dascenzo to ground to SS for the first out. Perez struck out Jeff Grotewald for the 2nd out before Rey Sanchez walked. Nonetheless, with 2 outs, Dawson was stranded at 3B when Wilkins grounded out to end the inning. The teams, tied 4-4, moved on to extra innings. It didn't take long for both teams to score again. Chicago received a surprising 1-out, 2-run HR from little-used CF caddie Gary Pettis in the top of the 10th. Bob Scanlan was unable to finish the bottom of the inning as he retired only the first of 5 hitters. With the bases loaded, 1 out, and a 6-5 deficit, reliever Paul Assenmacher was summoned to strike out "the Wizard." With 2 outs and the game on the line, Righty-killer Paul Wagner was called upon to face 5L Andres Galarraga. However, Hal pulled the Big Cat for lefty-hitting Milt Thompson. Wagner won this
battle as Thompson flied out to Dawson in right to end the game. Pettis was the star for Chicago with 2 hits and 3 RBI, while RF Felix Jose collected 3 hits for the Cardinals. Final Score: Chicago 6, St.Louis 5, 10 innings WP- C.Jones 3-1, LP- Carpenter 2-5, SV- Wagner (1) HR- Gilkey (5), Pettis (1) G4 This seemed to be the chance the Cubs were craving to start their move in the NL East, but if that was the case, the 4th game in the series was absolute flop. Donovan Osborne (6 5 1 1 0 5) and two relievers held Chicago at bay while St. Louis banged out 14 hits and scored 10 runs. Bernard Gilkey stayed hot with 2 home runs (giving him 3 in 2 games). Ray
Lankford, Gilkey, and Smith each had 3 hits total as the home town fans enjoyed the rout. Final Score: St.Louis 10, Chicago 1 WP- Osborne 4-6, LP- Castillo 2-7 HR- Gilkey 2 (7), O'Brien (6), Lankford (8) |
