Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox

The Jays pull off one of our patented chokes in the opener then win the next two despite extreme surgery, mainly in the form of walks galore....

Game 1: The last thing that a team with the most massively underachieving offense anywhere needs is to face Roger Clemens, and for 6 innings this contest went unfortunately as expected with the Jays limited to one measly hit and one walk.  TOA starter Todd Stottlemyre was the victim of that bountiful offensive support, but pitched well anyway and only permitted Boston 2 runs through 6.

Suddenly in the 7th the Jays came out of hibernation and touched Clemens for 4 hits and we took a short-lived (of course) lead.  Devon White got into scoring position with 0 outs in the 8th, but never moved.  Surely that wouldn't matter.

Surgical walks off of Toronto pitchers weren't limited to the final 2 games: the Sox tied it up in the bottom of the 8th without even swinging the bat (walk, walk, 2-out walk, 2-out bases-loaded walk) as Henke choked the lead away with 2 free passes off his own card, and Duane Ward sealed the defeat by letting 3 batters in the bottom of the 9th bat 1.000 against him.  Bravo.  Final score: 4-3.

Game 2: Boston took another effort-free lead as A.L. All Star pitcher Juan Guzman walked the bases loaded in the first, then issued 2 more freebies in the second and they both scored on a blown-x double after advancing on a passed ball.

The Boston defense was no better than Toronto's (though they did turn 3 timely DPs), but their blown-x's took the form of 4 errors and 3 unearned runs.  The Jays regained the lead in the 3rd and didn't quite blow it, Guzman stopped walking everybody, and we got 3 late insurance runs off of the BOA pen.  Final score: 8-4.

Lead-footed singles hitter Mike Scioscia continues to become Willie Mays against Toronto, getting every SB jump possible, and today he had the Mays-like combo of a stolen base and a home run.

=======================================================

Game 3: Charlie Leibrandt held Boston to 4 hits (all singles) in 8 IP but the excellent control pitcher was dismembered for 7 walks, which fortunately turned mostly into LOB and the occasional DP.

The Jays took an early 4-0 lead against Bret Saberhagen and then went back into customary hibernation, and Leibrandt made the lead hold up -- his record is now almost .500!!! -- although Boston's one scoring frame looked rather familiar (walk, walk, HBP, 2-out walk....).  Final score: 4-2.

Saberhagen & Tom Edens gave up only 6 hits to the anemic Blue Jay offense, but 4 of them were XBH and those 6 hits produced 13 total bases including a double and triple from Dave Winfield and a Pat Borders home run.

Alan
