Subject: BAA @ MLA Week 13 (plus CM and other news)
A personal aside: Last weekend I went to California for a conference and extended the trip for two days so my wife and I could visit with fellow SMILEY owner Ben Lea and take in a Dodgers game. I hadn’t realized that it happened to be on Jackie Robinson Night, an amazing experience. Jackie’s widow and daughter were there, along with Don Newcombe, two of Roy Campanella’s children, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and two of the surviving Tuskegee Airmen. Harrison Ford threw out the first pitch, and Branch Rickey’s great-granddaughter can really sing. The game itself was lackluster, but who cares? Besides, I got a chuckle out of nearby fans during a Padres rally when I said, “Man, that 42 is killing us tonight.” ---- In a series filled with unearned runs (at least one for each team in each game), the Orioles take two of three in Milwaukee. Game 1: MLA 6, BAA 5 (18) Pat Listach tripled and scored in the first. In the second, Greg Vaughn tripled and scored. Then Willie Wilson singled, stole second, stole third, and scored on (naturally) a triple by Paul Molitor to give Milwaukee a 3-0 lead. The Orioles got on the board in the third as Chris Hoiles (!) tripled and scored, but Vaughn promptly answered with a two-run homer. Baltimore closed the lead to 5-4 in the fifth on a series of singles and a helpful passed ball, and mop-up reliever Bob Milacki was surprisingly effective in holding the Brewers at bay. In the top of the ninth, Randy Milligan led off with (sure enough) a triple and scored on a Ripken single to tie the game at 5-5. That’s where it stood for inning after inning, as the Orioles failed to capitalize on numerous opportunities – including Candy Maldonado’s triple in the 15th -- and Milwaukee hit into three double plays. The ending was anticlimactic; a rare error by Brady Anderson and a subsequent steal by Jim Gantner set the stage for Wilson’s game-ending RBI single. Fun Fact: The six players who tripled during this game had combined for just nine triples through Week 12. Game 2: BAA 5, MLA 1 After scoring an unearned run in the 2nd, Baltimore strung together a series of hits off Bill Wegman in the 3rd to take a 4-0 lead. Meanwhile, workhorse starter Charles Nagy gave the Orioles’ bullpen some much-needed rest by throwing a five-hitter complete game, allowing just an unearned run in the 5th. It didn’t figure in the scoring, but Baltimore’s Chico Walker became the seventh player to triple in this series. Game 3: BAA 12, MLA 4 Baltimore’s Brady Anderson led off the game with a single, stole second, and scored on a Cal Ripken single for a quick 1-0 lead; the O’s then loaded the bases but were denied a big inning by a Brewers double play. The lead grew to 2-0 in the 2nd when a Sid Bream error set up an RBI double by David Segui, but Bream atoned for it in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double to make it 2-1 Orioles. (Also in the 2nd, Ruben Sierra tried to join the triples club but was gunned out at third by Mike Devereaux.) In the third, Devereaux singled in a run and scored on a passed ball, and Leo Gomez chased Brewers starter Chris Bosio with a two-run homer to put Baltimore up 6-1. In the 5th the O’s added another run when Devereaux tripled and scored on a groundout, but the Brewers countered with a double by BJ Surhoff and an RBI single by Mickey Morandini for a 7-2 score. Milwaukee reliever Ted Power, pitching in his third straight game, finally tired in the 6th, giving up a three-run long ball to Hoiles and a solo shot by Devereaux for an 11-2 Orioles lead. Milwaukee got a free run in the 6th (error, wild pitch, wild pitch, sac fly) which the O’s quickly matched in the 7th with their own unearned run. Another error and a passed ball helped Milwaukee to their last, meaningless run in the 9th. Despite a penchant for giving up leadoff doubles, Mike Mussina went 7 innings for his tenth win of the season; Devereaux fell a double short of hitting for the cycle. |
