Subject: Blue Jays @ Brewers
The Jays' 6-game lead as of yesterday is (was) an illusion, existing for the sole purpose of having us choke it away. Take this series for example. It would be inaccurate to say that nothing went Toronto's way -- after all, of the 197 stolen base attempts by the Brewers, 3 or 4 were unsuccessful. But the biggest break we got was that it was only a 3 game series, not 4, as the utterly, totally and completely luckless team from north of the border got no actual breaks whatsoever.... Game 1: Facing rookie phenom Cal Eldred, the season-long dormant Toronto offense was exactly as effective as you'd expect. Meanwhile, HAL immediately zeroed in on nothing but the most loaded columns and gave the Brewers an instant 3-0 lead against All-Star pitcher Juan Guzman. And that's the ballgame. Final score: 4-0. Despite being outhit 11-5 the Jays managed 100% more LOB than Milwaukee thanks to a robust 2 for 14 performance with runners on base. ======================================== Game 2: The Jays scored a run today! And then gave up the next 6. Final score: 6-1. Once again a massive deficit in the hit column did not prevent the determined but massively underachieving Toronto offense from completing our vital mission to strand more runners than our opponent, as today we made a winner out of Hittable Jaime Navarro by focusing like a laser beam on his 6 column. His empty 6 column. Luckless Charlie Leibrandt departed from typical form, not by losing (hardly) but by failing to survive his weekly surgery, allowing 11 baserunners and 5 runs in less than 7 IP. ======================================== Game 3: Thanks to Bobby Witt's solid performance we had a slim (as opposed to nonexistent) chance to win this one, but a clutch two-out hit in the MLA 7th plated the losing run. Final score: 2-1. The Jays actually outhit the Brewers (!) and only tied them in LOB (!) but the only run for the visitors came on a Dave Winfield home run with, of course, nobody on base. We out-did our rotten game 1 stats by batting only 1 for 11 with runners on base, including a costly DP which naturally was immediately followed by a woulda-been RBI single to tie the game in the 8th.
