Subject: Reds @ Dodgers

The Reds struggle massively with the last-place Dodgers, but do better than expected and actually win the series!  Cincy eked out narrow victories in the first two contests before losing to an 0-9 pitcher who predictably saved his very best effort of the season for the Reds....

Game 1: We were just cruising along, getting 0% of the breaks as usual and LOBbing runners galore while watching the Dodgers put on a clutch hitting clinic against Kevin Gross.  Darrin Jackson cut our deficit to 3-2 in the 7th, so we gave newly-acquired Mike Schooler a chance to pitch.  Apparently he just isn't going to fit in here.

Schooler pitched well and wound up the winner when the Reds put together a series of scratch singles in the 9th!  Four singles and a sac fly leading off the frame provided 3 runs and a 5-3 win when Greg Harris escaped the jam he created in the bottom of the inning.

Eric Karros drove in all 3 runs for L.A. with a pair of split card gophers, the second one of the extremely surgical variety.

=============================================

Game 2: Tim Belcher (11-3) and Tom Candiotti (2-11) had almost identically excellent outings today, the only difference being Paul O'Neill's solo homer in the Cincy 4th.  Other than that the two starters combined for 13 IP, no runs, 7 hits & 3 walks.

O'Neill also helpfully gunned down a baserunner, which would loom large in the outcome.

With the score still just 1-0 in the 9th, Jackson led off with a triple and 2 outs later still stood there (as so often happens with the Reds).  But Joe Oliver came through with an RBI double, which also loomed large after reliever Dwayne Henry allowed the Dodgers an RBI double of their own with -- naturally -- 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.

Schooler was summoned into the save situation.... and struck out Gary Gaetti to end the game!  Schooler will learn the patented "Cincinnati Way" of choking soon enough, but for now he's making it seem that last week's trade should have been made far earlier in the year.

=============================================

Game 3: L.A.'s Ramon Martinez came into today with an 0-9 record and an ERA about where an 0-9 pitcher ought to be.  Today he allowed just one hit in 6 innings, an RBI single to Jackson in the first, and won by the score of 5-1.

Luckless Jose Rijo suffered yet another road start featuring a brutally focused attack on his 4 column, and was eventually nibbled to death by singles and the occasional surgical split card gopher (Karros again).

Steve Foster mopped up and showed Schooler how the Cincy pen works (2 innings, 1 gopher to powerful Luis Sojo, 2 runs) while Shawn Boskie permitted runners but no runs to the Reds in his 3-inning stint.

Alan
