Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees

After last week's unmitigated disaster, the Jays hoped to rebound against the last-place team in the East and, aside from one routine luckless performance, we did!  Dave Stieb won his first game of 1992 and two other pitchers tossed complete-game shutouts (at least in terms of *earned* runs)....

Game 1: Tim Fortugno finally had a decent outing, giving the Yankees 9 baserunners in 9 innings and getting them to LOB 9.  The one baserunner that left fielder Greg Briley gave the Yankees resulted in an unearned run but Fortugno permitted no further erosion of his 4-0 lead.  Final score: 4-1.

Five hits (of the 8 we got all day) in the 4th resulted in 4 runs off of NYA starter Scott Kamieniecki, but ex-Blue Jay reliever Willie Blair held the visitors to 1 hit in 5 innings to keep things close.  The efficient yet typically meager Toronto attack LOBbed just 3 runners thanks to hitting into 2 timely GIDPs.

=======================================================

Game 2: Every New York batter had at least 1 hit, and 6 of them had at least 2 as Bobby Witt and three hapless relievers were victimized to the tune of 19 hits and 26 total bases.  Jays get destroyed, 10-3.

Witt was torched immediately as he took the mound, but homers by Dave Winfield and Manny Lee cut the deficit to 4-3.  Witt then reported for follow-up surgery and Bob Macdonald (one batter faced, one 2-run gopher) supplied what would have been a "Perfect Sambito" if it'd had any effect on the outcome.  NYA starter Melido Perez was the recipient of HAL's generosity, cruising along on a 5-hitter with 12 Ks.

=======================================================

Game 3: Toronto was displaying its usual hilarious ineptitude at delivering runners from scoring position, especially with less than 2 outs -- and there was no shortage of opportunities against our old buddy Jimmy Key -- until Derek Bell came through with the team's first clutch hit in a month and helped turn a slender 3-2 lead into a 6-2 win for Dave Stieb.

Stieb was not at his best (then again maybe he was, with that rotten card), allowing 11 baserunners in 6.2 innings but just 2 runs, as he got the Yankees to LOB almost as many runners as we did.  Macdonald redeemed himself from yesterday's arson by supplying 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and earning his second save of the year.

Toronto had 18 total bases to New York's 8, but was at serious risk of losing until Bell delivered a 2-out double with the bases loaded in the 8th.

=======================================================

Game 4: For a guy who tossed a shutout and allowed only 5 baserunners (1 single, 2 doubles, 2 walks), Jack Morris seemed to be dodging bullets all day long but raised his record to 9-5 and lowered his ERA to 2.71.

Dave Righetti was matching zeroes with Morris on the scoreboard until Joe Carter's double and Mike Fitzgerald's home run put us up by 3 in the 5th.  That was all for Rags, and reliever Rich Monteleone shut down the Jays with the exception of 2 unearned insurance runs in the 8th.  Final score: 5-0.
