Subject: Reds @ Expos

Reds toss a 4-hitter in the opener -- and barely eke out a win -- then play down to our customary massively underachieving level for the rest of the series, choking away the final 2 contests in our opponent's final at-bat as we so often do....

Game 1: Cincy's Tim Belcher permitted just 4 baserunners in 6 IP but Montreal's Chris Nabholz wasn't much worse and neither starter was around for the final decision.  That came in the top of the 9th when John Wetteland walked a pair and Barry Larkin singled one home to break the 1-1 tie which had stood since the first inning.  Final score: 2-1.

Cincy should have dominated on the scoreboard, out-LOBbing the home team 11-4 and -- our new favorite stat to excel at -- amassing a whopping 13-2 lead in "RLISP 2-out".

Mike Schooler earned his second save as a Red and kept his ERA at 0.00.  For now.

===========================================================

Game 2: Hittable Butch Henry was anything but, while the Expos bombarded Luckless Greg Swindell and sent him into double figures in losses.  Final score: 6-2, as the Expos outhit the Reds 13-4 and the ratio of breaks was far worse than even that lopsided margin.  Henry had a 6-0 lead after 7 before allowing a couple of pointless runs.

The first 5 MON runs scored with -- what else? -- 2 outs in the inning.

===========================================================

Game 3: Cincy's "Henry", though not nearly so hittable as the Montreal version, came through in a big way today, but not in a way that helped his own side.  Trailing from the second inning on, the Reds valiantly fought back to tie the game in the 8th with considerable assistance from the Expo defense: 2 errors, followed by a Reggie Sanders triple that wasn't a blown-x.

Then Dwayne Henry came on to relieve battered starter Kevin Gross and gave up the losing hit with -- what else? -- 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.  Reds choke again, 5-4.

Who says the Reds don't know what a clutch hit looks like?  We see them all the time: through 3 games the Expos had scored 12 runs, 10 of them crossing the plate after 2 were out in the inning.

===========================================================

Game 4: Neither Tom Browning nor Dennis Martinez had a day they'll want to remember, but while Martinez was holding the Reds to a bunch of singles (and 12 critical LOB), Browning and Schooler were demolished for 7 extra-base hits, including 2 gophers from .215-hitting catcher Ron Karkovice.

Down 4-0 after 4, the Reds valiantly (and, again, pointlessly) fought back to tie the game in the 7th.  Enter Mike Schooler for the 8th and it was "Perfect Sambito" time when Karkovice led off with the game-losing gopher.  Not content with that, he then allowed a triple and an RBI single to seal the choke.  Final score: 7-5.

Schooler gave up 4 hits in 2 innings, a perfect cycle for the Expos, as he was finally christened as an official member of the Arson Squad.

Alan
