Subject: Chicago at San Francisco

The Cubs ran into an underrated team in San Francisco this week.  Both teams went at each other tooth-and-nail, but neither had anything more to show for their troubles than a split in 4 games.

G1 With a '92 Cubs' team that actually went 83-79, starter Frank Castillo had a record that year of 11-12, 3.46 ERA.  This year he's had trouble keeping his ERA under 4.00, and the wins have been sparse.  In the opener at Candlestick, Castillo (9 6 0 0 1 4) fashioned an old-fashioned whitewash to improve his record to 4-8 and lower his ERA to 3.65.  The Giants had runners at 2nd base in each of the first 2 innings, but never reached scoring position again. Meanwhile, the Cubs cashed in with 2-spots in the 1st and 6th innings by collecting 3 hits each time to make a loser of Jose Mesa (5 7 4 4 3 1).  The top of Chicago's order (Roberts, Grace, & Sandberg) was quite productive as the 3hitters went 8-for-14 and scored all 4 of the game's runs.  1B Lee Stevens was the only player to collect multiple hits (2-for-3) off Castillo, but he made a costly error in the 6th that helped Chicago extend its lead.

Final Score: Chicago 4, San Francisco 0
WP- F.Castillo 4-8, LP- Mesa 4-4
HR- none

G2  Just when things started to look like they were becoming "easy," the Cubs' ahem... cough .. "manager" coughed up a 5-0 lead in the 2nd game, and lost by 3 runs.  This was a case where starter Doug Drabek (6 14 8 8 2 2) lost his stuff, and in addition to trying to get him to double figures in wins, I was unwilling to believe that San Francisco would keep pounding him.  Well, they did.  Led by Will "The Thrill" Clark's 4-for-5effort (raising his average to .304) and Mark Leonard's 3-for-4 game, the Giants attacked Chicago with 2 runs in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, 1 in the 6th, and a flurry of 3 decisive runs in the 7th.  Meanwhile Bill Swift (8 9 5 5 1 3) hung around long enough to notch his 6th win of the year.  Chicago's top 3 again led the way for the Cubs with a combined 5-for-12 with all 5 of Chicago's RBI.  San Francisco showed its aggressiveness by pounding out 17 hits in 8 innings whileonly accepting 2 walks.

Final Score: San Francisco 8, Chicago 5
WP- Swift 6-4, LP- Drabek 9-7, SV- Beck (22)
HR- Grace (13), W.Clark (12)

G3 was a fine pitching matchup between two of the finer NL pitchers of the 90's.  Terry Mulholland (7 4 1 1 1 5) ended up outdueling Darryl Kile (6 4 3 3 2 8) as the Giants moved to the lead in series' wins.  The first inning ended up being decisive as SF broke out on top, 2-0, on back-to-back 2-out homers by Darren Daulton and Jose Canseco as they rolled on their owncards.  Canseco's was the key blast as pulled the "3" on the BP home run.  Mark Grace led off the 4th with a triple before scoring the Cubs' only run on a sac fly, but the Giants got that run back in the 6th when Lee Stevens singled home Daulton with 2 outs.  For the 2nd game in a row, Rod Beck pitched a scoreless 9th to seal the deal.  Chicago's Grace and Randy Ready were the only players in the game to collect 2 hits.

Final Score: San Francisco 3, Chicago 1
WP- Mulholland 11-6, LP- Kile 3-8, SV- Beck (23)
HR- Daulton (12), Canseco (21)

G4 The finale provided yet one more fine pitching matchup.  The Cubs earned the sweep as ace Mike Morgan (6 2 1 0 1 0) bested San Francisco's Bud Black (6 2/3 8 3 2 0 4) in a game Chicago's bullpen needed all hands on deck.  In the 7th, the Cubs broke a 1-1 tie when PH Bip Roberts singled home Scott Servais and later came around to score on a Sandberg RBI single.  Since Morgan was the one Roberts PH for, Paul Assenmacher wassummoned to face Mark Leonard.  However, Leonard did not bat as PH Jose Canseco ripped Assenmacher for a long home run.  With the score now 3-2, Chicago used 3 more relievers over the final 3 innings to eke out the win.  Smith, Scanlan and Howell did a stellar job as they only allowed one baserunner (Will Clark's 9th inning single prior to Darren Daulton's GIDP).  Will Clark finished a 7-for-10 series by going 2-for-4 in the finale. Sandberg led Chicago hitters as he collected 3 singles.

Final Score: Chicago 3, San Francisco 2
WP- Morgan 11-6, LP- Black 8-6, SV- Howell (16)
HR- Canseco (22)
