One patented two-out surgical choke separates the Jays from sweeping 4 games. All were close aside from the opener in Oakland, and even that one became close.... OAA Game 1: The Jays jumped on Oakland starter Mike Moore for 6 early runs, 5 of them unearned (2 of those from Moore's own error) then politely aborted the attack and let the A's halve the lead. But two late homers reset the margin to 6 and the Jays won by the score of 9-3. Devon White had a rare good day (2 for 5, double, homer, stolen base) and Juan Guzman tossed a complete game 6-hitter and kept the A's off balance by refusing to throw a pitch anywhere near the strike zone and walking 17 batters. Actually 6, but it seemed like a hell of a lot more. ======================================================= Game 2: John Olerud's second home run of the series gave Toronto an immediate 2-0 lead but a surgical split homer by Terry Steinbach in the 6th erased Charlie Leibrandt's lead. But Greg Myers answered for the Jays with an equally surgical split card homer (!!!) leading off the 7th, after which the Jays resumed our usual LOB with RISP but Leibrandt allowed nothing more and Tom Henke retired all 5 A's that he faced. Final score: 3-2, with Leibrandt getting a rare 'W'. Dave Stewart started for the A's and was replaced by Edwin Nunez after walking Joe Carter to open the TOA 6th -- at which point Nunez fanned the next 3 batters on 9 pitches -- but he took the loss when he allowed Myers' homer. ======================================================= SEA Game 1: Todd Stottlemyre gave the M's 3 early runs and went on to a miserable day, but Seattle's Jack McDowell was no better (4.2 IP, *13* baserunners). McDowell did however fare better in terms of not allowing runs, as the Jays were in the process of LOBbing 12 today. Toronto fought back to tie the game at 4, it took ONE PITCH for Seattle to retake the lead, then we tied it up again. The choke occurred when Mike Timlin fanned two powerful hitters to open the SEA 7th, then got Griffey to hit into an x-play to the mound. Timlin is an e0 so naturally the result had to be a single, and it was. The next batter walked, then there was a single (split card: 1) to load the bases and another single (split card: 1) to plate the two losing runs before the final out of the frame was recorded at last. Final score: 7-5. Why anyone would feel the need to try to intimidate the monstrously underachieving Blue Jay batters is a mystery, but they received 4 HBP today, without apparent retaliation. ======================================================= Game 2: Three consecutive singles put the visitors up 3-0 in the second against Trevor Wilson, while Dave Stieb was pitching like his old self through 5 innings. Stieb broke the shutout and entirely erased the lead all at the same by allowing a bases-loaded double to .200-hitting catcher Sandy Alomar with -- of course -- 2 outs. Duane Ward entered and did what he does best, giving up an immediate RBI, and what had moments earlier been a 3-run lead was now a deficit and we were in position to witness yet another Blue Jay choke-loss. But Ward chokes *SO* often that the Toronto offense is used to it and actually knows how to respond. It helped that the Mariners used their recent Cincinnati acquisitions in relief, and the Jays turned 4 baserunners in the 9th into 3 LOB but also 1 run; Norm Charlton took the loss. Final score: 7-5, as Ward registers his tenth (!) win of 1992. Alan |
