Subject: Reds @ Padres
Rising from the dead 16 weeks too late, the Reds "upset" the Padres by getting more breaks this series than we had this entire season up to now. Actually, our defense fumbled and bumbled like the Keystone Cops, we had runners galore erased on the bases; Cincy "got the breaks" only in the sense that the Padres didn't get nearly as many as usual this season.... Game 1: Facing Hittable Jimmy Jones, the Reds managed to go 9 entire innings without so much as one single. Cincy had 3 hits all day, one double and two solo (of course) home runs. Meanwhile HAL attacked Joey Rijo's 4 column as he does every time out, and our sabotage defense helpfully contributed numerous hits and errors. The Padres outhit the Reds 10-3, but somehow lost 3-1. Cincy had just extended our massive 1-0 lead to 3-0 via 6th inning homers by Kruk and Jackson, when HAL decided he'd had enough and immediately whipped out the ol' scalpel in the bottom of the frame. After an out, HAL rolled Rijo's loaded 4 column FIVE straight times, but it was good for only 4 baserunners and 1 run as Benito Santiago accidentally rolled on his own card and found the third out of the inning. From then on San Diego got only a blown-x single and an error, but we didn't quite give the game away despite the significant effort. ========================================================= Game 2: Loading the lineup with as many lefties as possible against SDN's Bruce Hurst, the Reds gave Chris Hammond an early 4-0 lead mainly due to Eddie Taubensee's 3-run homer in the first. Both teams -- not just the Reds for a change -- came up very small in clutch situations thereafter, with the Reds scoring 0 more runs and the Pads just 1 off of Hammond. An unearned run donated by the Reds in the bottom of the 9th made the contest dangerously close, but Dennis Rasmussen earned his first save of the season against his former team by eventually retiring the side. Final score: 4-2. ========================================================= Game 3: The Reds took another quick 3-0 lead, and this time we successfully managed to fritter it all away thanks to -- what else? -- some more timely defensive failures (3 unearned runs). Down 4-3 with time beginning to run out, the Reds finally vanquished Padre starter Eric King and hammered reliever John Habyan for an 8-4 comeback win. Cincy amassed a 17-11 advantage in total bases and drew 4 walks while allowing just 1, but had to overcome our pathetic defense and lack of clutch hitting. Mike Schooler tossed 3 hitless innings and notched save #3. ========================================================= Game 4: Kevin Gross was in unfortunately typical form, and today it was the home team scoring early. The Reds came back from 2 runs down in the 5th when Kruk haunted his old mates with another home run. But Gross gave the lead away immediately, though reliever Steve Foster did an excellent job of escaping the bases-loaded jam without even more damage. Habyan was the goat again, giving up a leadoff triple to Jeff Branson then balking the run home on his next pitch. These are the Reds; Branson likely wouldn't have scored otherwise. A sac fly plated an insurance run in the 8th before yet another runner was gunned down. Cincy only advanced on the bases when Gwynn threw the ball away, which he did twice in the series. Otherwise they were all gunned. It's another dubious category in which the luckless 1992 Reds lead the major leagues. Final score: 5-3. Foster got the W and Greg Harris pitched 3 shaky innings for the save, his 5th. The Padres had 2 split card chances at BPHRs in the late innings but, astonishingly, missed them. Alan |
