Despite no luck in the splits almost the entire series, the Padres take 3 of 4 from LA
game 1: Bp single (split of 4) cs (one of our rare good splits), bp single (Split of 4) and hr (split of 2) give LA the 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Padres get walk, single, single to start the 6th and cut the lead to 1. Santiago comes up with men on first and third and gets single1-11, the split is 12 and the runner at third is thrown out. Next batter gets clutch out #17 of the season to end the inning. Dodgers get back to back 1 out doubles in the 8th to win 3-2.
game 2: In a 2 inning period the Padres get 3 splits of 8 on hr chances that were 1-6, 1-7 and 1-7, but at least got a couple doubles out of them. The last one produced the first run on the game in the 4th. Easley doubled in an insurance run in the6th and SD won 2-0 behind Hurst, Davis and Habyan. From the 5th through 7th innings the Padres ended the inning by getting splits of 18,19 and 20.
game 3: Sheffield hit a 3 run homer in the first but LA got a single run in each of the first 3 inning to tie it. McGriff's 2 run double in the 5th gave the Padres the lead for good. The Crime Dog added a solo homer in the 8th and Fernandez an rbi single in the 9th. Gaetti added a hr (split of 2) in the 9th to make the final 7-4.
game 4: Curtis had an rbi single in the 1st and scored on a SHeffield double in the 3rd. LA got that run back in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly and tied it in the 4th on a Vizquel single. Dave Gallaghers first homer of the season ( a rare good split) gave SD the 4-2 lead in the 5th. They added runs in the 6th andn 8th to win 6-2. Seminara labored through 5 innings to get the win and Davis got the rare 4 inning save.
After dropping to .291 on july 5th, Gwynn has gone 33-77 to raise his average up to .316 for the season. Forget that he already has more strikeouts than he should for the whole season (20 vs 17).
