The Cubs continue to break even on the road vs. quality competition.
G1 Greg Maddux (5 2 0 0 0 2) was somehow pulled after allowing a leadoff single to Frank Castillo in the 6th inning, but Barry Bonds' 3rd inning sac fly and Frank Castillo's 5th inning wild pitch after consecutive singles by Orlando Merced and Jeff Huson gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead after 6 complete. Chicago dented the board in the 7th on a triple by Rick Wilkins followed by a RBI single by Juan Bell (who moved to 3B on the play when Merced booted the ball.) Roger Mason was then summoned to retire both Benny Distefano and Doug Dascenzo while stranding Bell 90 feet from home. That ended up being the ol' ballgame as Mason didn't allow a hit the rest of the way to record his 1st save of the year. Pittsburgh outhit Chicago, 6-4, but no player from either team managed more than 1 hit himself.
Final Score: Pittsburgh 2, Chicago 1 WP- Maddux 11-8, LP- Castillo 4-10, SV- Mason (1) HR- none
G2 It looked like the Pirates were on their way to a sweep when they scored 5 unearned runs behind Zane Smith (7 1/3 9 4 4 1 3) by the 4th inning. Cubs' hurler Darryl Kile (4 5 6 1 6 3) continued to pitch in bad luck although 6 walks and an error of his own weren't helpful either. Chcago made some noise in the 6th on Randy Ready's 2-run homer and Bip Roberts 2-RBI single, but Mark Grace bounced into an inning inning DP with runners on 1st and 3rd which ended the Cubs' only threat. Jeff Huson came through with an RBI single in the 3rd and a 3-run HR in the 4thto lead the Bucco attack.
Final Score: Pittsburgh 7, Chicago 4
WP- Smith 7-6, LP- Kile 3-9, SV- Belinda (25) HR- Huson (5), Ready (4)
G3 was quite close until the 8th inning. The Pirates tied the game, 4-4, in the 7th on Merced's RBI single which scored PH Cecil Espy (who doubled leading off). Then came the "had to be there to believe it" 8th for Chicago. None of the first 9 batters who came to the plate made an out (5 singles, 3 doubles, and a homerun). The 10th batter walked and the 11th batter tripled. Things settled down after that as 3 of the next four players made outs, but when the smoke cleared, Chicago led, 15-4. In the 8th, Pittsburgh used 3 pitchers who were unable Mike Lavalliere quietly raised his average to .300 with a 2-for-3 effort in the losing cause. Chicago outhit Pittsburgh, 18-11, on the day.
Final Score: Chicago 15, Pittsburgh 5 WP- Scanlan 3-3, LP- Patterson 2-2 HR- Sorrento (11), C.Hayes (10), G.Hill (12)
G4 After the huge uprising in G3, the Cubs needed every run in the finale to earn the split. Both lineups got off to good starts as the score was tied, 5-5 after 5 innings. Hal decided Bob Patterson needed to come right back into another tied game after his poor pitching the day before. It didn't work out much better for him this time as Scott Servais singled with 2 outs in the 6th and Gary Pettis followed with an RBI triple to give Chicago a lead the Cubs would not relinquish. The north-siders' bullpen pitched 4 innings of scoreless baseball (1 hit allowed) to sAlex Arias was the hero as he went 3-for-5 with 3 BI to raise his season average to .366. Merced finished a strong series (6-for-16 with 6 runs scored in the leadoff spot) with a final 2-for-4 effort that raised his season average to a modest .216.
Final Score: Chicago 6, Pittsburgh 5 WP- Morgan 12-6, LP- Patterson 2-3, SV- Howell (18) HR- none |
