Subject: Reds @ Cubs
These two teams entered the series with identical records and left the same way, as the Reds continue to fail to take advantage of opportunities. Wrigley Field is supposed to be a generous ballpark, but you'd never know it from Cincy's performance as we constantly missed easy (and ultimately critical) ballpark homers and singles galore, while the home team naturally did not miss.... Game 1: Chicago's Pete Harnisch allowed 3 runs in the first but the Cincinnati offense self-aborted after compiling the early lead, as we always do in that situation. Kevin Gross pitched into the 9th and took a shutout into the 7th before a gopher and a sac fly narrowed the CHN deficit to just one run. But Darrin Jackson's 2-run homer restored our lead and Mike Schooler took care of business in the 9th to earn his 4th save since arriving from Seattle. Final score: 5-2. Each team collected just 6 hits and drew 2 walks. ================================================ Game 2: The old, familiar Cincy luck returned today, with a vengeance. Two gimme BPHRs missed and even more BP singles avoided; 3 critical DPs hit into; nothing even faintly resembling a clutch hit (0 for 5 with RISP) except ones going against us; 1 solid pitching performance from Tim Pugh, ruined. Final score: a 2-0 loss. The Reds got the tying run on base with nobody out in the 9th and, big surprise, hit into DP #3 to seal up the defeat. ================================================ Game 3: Cincy had the better of the hits (13) and total bases (19) but it took a 9th inning rally to break the tie after we had forfeited a pair of late-inning leads. Scott Fletcher's pinch-single plated the winning runs in the top of the frame and reliever Greg Harris generously gave the Cubs a rally in the bottom of the inning, but escaped damage. Final score: 5-2. Starters Greg Swindell and Doug Drabek combined for 15 IP but no decisions, Swindell coming one unearned run away from a win thanks to Jeff Branson's 2-base error (when just 1 base wouldn't have gotten the job done). Neither team scored until the Reds got a pair of doubles in the 6th, which was quickly followed by Branson's lead erasure. ================================================ Game 4: Little-used Dennis Rasmussen was given a 1-0 lead on a 4th inning sac fly but he then promptly loaded the bases for the Cubs and got them to hit into a DP -- not the kind the Reds hit into which nails the runner at the plate, but the kind which produces the tying run. With the score still knotted at 1, the Reds ominously LOBbed the bases loaded in the 8th but Rasmussen got the first 2 outs in the CHN 8th before allowing an elusive (to Cincy hitters, anyway) ballpark single. Enter Schooler for his official welcome to the Cincinnati Arson Squad, and what better way to do it than with -- that's right -- a "Perfect Sambito"! There's only one possible dice roll to get on base in Glenallen Hill's 1 column, and Schooler found it: an automatic BPHR. With Schooler instantly yanked from the mound at that point, Dwayne Henry permitted 3 more baserunners and another run before getting the final out, 5 batters after we'd gotten the second out. Final score: 4-1 via another patented 2-out choke in our opponent's final at bats of the day. CHN starter Mike Morgan kept the woefully underachieving CIN offense off balance with convenient wildness (6 walks, but also 6 K's), correctly realizing that our clutch chokers would do absolutely nothing to turn those runners into runs.
