Sox split both series in about the same fashion. lose game 1 by a run in extra innings and win game 2 with good pitching. Ellis Burks goes out with a bang as he hit 3 homers in the 4 games.
Chicago
game 1: Not many teams can claim a 6 run inning in a losing effort but the Sox managed to do just that. After Boston had 3 base runners without scoring (thanks to a hit and run dp), the other Sox put up a 3 spot thanks to 4 singles (2 of which were 1-6 bp chances), a walk and an error. They stretched the lead to 4 in the 2nd. Boston then got their 6 spot in the 4th thanks to 5 singles, a double, a walk and an error. 2 walks and 3 singles put Chicago back up a run in the 5th. Cooper started the Boston 8th by reaching 2nd on a single+error by Mr Ironhands Jose Offerman. After being wild pitched to 3rd he stayed as the next batters made outs before Scioscia delivered the tying single. In the 11th Chicago got walk, sb,sb, walk, sb (no throw on the double steal), single to win it 8-7.
game 2: Bret Saberhagen had his best game as a Red Sox as he tossed 7 shutout innings allowing just 2 hits and 1 walk with 8 strikeouts. Jody Reed's sac fly in the 5th was the only run until Burks homered in the 8th. Lilliquist pitched 2 innings to save the 2-0 lead despite making things more interesting than needed. In the 9th, Newsom (15% on base chance) hits it back to e0 Lilliquist so naturally it went for a single. He was erased on a double play. Chicago had 4 hits , 2 by Newsom and 2 by Wallach.
Minnesota
game 1: Through 6 1/2 innings both teams had the same line score of 0-2-0. Naturally the first Twin the bottom of the 7th hit a homer to give them the 1-0 lead. Down to their last out in the 9th, Bruno singled and Greenwell reached on an error by Knoblauch (e8) before Burks singled to tie the game. Hrbek's 2 out double in the 10th gave Minnesota the 2-1 win.
game 2: Burks led off the game with a homer and also homered on his 2nd at bat against Bert Blyleven. Dave Bergman hit his 1st homer as well just before Burks 2nd shot to give Boston the 3-0 lead. 4 straight singles after Burks' homer made it a 5-0 game in the 3rd. Puckett doubled in a run in the 6th and Jacoby had an rbi single in the 7th to complete the scoring as Boston won 6-1. Teams combined to turn 7 double plays in this one. In the 2nd and 5th innings, both teams turned a double play.
