Subject: Blue Jays @ Twins and White Sox
Toronto, trying desperately to stay afloat in the A.L. East, takes 2 from Minnesota then barely survives the Attack of the Surgical Split Cards to get a split in Chicago. Quality pitching was not much in evidence in either series; now that the Jays are finally (17 weeks into the season) beginning to just hit a little, the guys on the mound have forgotten what to do.... MNA Game 1: Chuck Knoblauch got the game started happily for the visitors by blowing x-plays on first 2 batters of the day, leading to 3 unearned runs and enabling the Jays to make short work of MNA starter Sid Fernandez (1.2 IP, 7 runs). A 7-0 lead is one that even the Blue Jays can hold almost 50% of the time, and we did so today, but not for lack for effort in a choking direction. First, the offense went back into complete hibernation after 2 innings and scored 0 runs the rest of the way. Then Todd Stottlemyre decided that cruising along with a large lead was too easy, and gophered up a trio of runs before retiring a batter in the 7th. Tom Henke mowed them down in the 7th and 8th but gave up a run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and brought the tying run to the plate. Who would have known (when it was 7-0) that those 3 runs we got from Knoblauch would be critical? But they were. Final score: 7-5. ================================================== Game 2: Neither team even thought about crossing home plate until Pat Borders got a surprising RBI triple with one out in the 5th and then unsurprisingly didn't score. Two insurance runs in the 7th were very helpful, and the only run Jack Morris gave back came via a Steve Buechele triple in the 8th which was followed immediately by a timely wild pitch. After Morris allowed a single with 2 outs in the 9th, Mike Timlin got Brian Harper to ground out to complete the brief sweep. Final score: 3-1. ================================================== CHA Game 1: The Sox built a 4-0 lead against Dave Stieb but Joe Carter tied the game with a 3-run homer off of Mark Gardner in the 5th after Greg Briley's sac fly got us on the board; we then loaded the bases for the second time in the inning, but left them that way. Moments later (after we left 2 more RISP without scoring) Stieb was back on the losing end when Chad Kreuter singled home Jose Offerman. Mike Fitzgerald tied it again with a sac fly and Tim Fortugno (with the help of an error) let the first 3 ChiSox batters reach base in the bottom of the 9th but, incredibly, nobody scored. Then the Sox put a runner on third with 0 outs in the 10th -- and STILL didn't score (!). Briley singled and was gunned trying to steal -- a tremendously costly event, as it turned out -- to open the TOA 11th, but Olerud singled and Winfield homered to give Toronto a 7-5 lead. But Fortugno finally turned back into a pumpkin and Dave Valle's pinch-hit gopher tied the game again. Duane Ward got 2 outs in the bottom of the 12th but choked up 2 hits on surgical split cards, the last of which was a 3-run gopher by Tim Raines. Final score: 10-7, and when we lose the pennant by 1 game we'll remember this one, and a dozen others just like it. ================================================== Game 2: It looked like we were headed for disaster once the Sox broke out their "1's". Steve Finley homered (split card: 1) in the second; any higher would have been a triple, and he wouldn't have scored. Warren Newson homered in the CHA 3rd (split card: 1) to break the 1-1 tie. The Sox threatened to extend their lead in the 6th after 2 outs when Finley singled, stole second (split card: 1) and advanced to third on an error (split card: 1) but somehow he didn't score. Toronto broke on top in the 7th when Devon White delivered a bases-loaded double that gave us a 3-2 lead. The score was tied again immediately when Bobby Witt gave up a 2-out single in the bottom of the frame. Bobby Thigpen took over for Radinsky and demoralized the home crowd by allowed a 3-run homer to Briley, at which point the Sox fell apart. Roberto Hernandez replaced Thigpen and was torched for 5 more runs and the Jays led 12-4. Naturally we almost created a save situation, as Fortugno's bottom of the 9th effort included 3 walks (all off his own card) a wild pitch and 2 hits. A 3-1 game after 6 innings became a 12-6 final. Six of the runs the Sox allowed were unearned, but we donated one of our own and prevailed by 1 run in the earned run department. Alan |
