The Cubs fiinally break through on the road vs. the cellar-dwelling Mets. G1 The Mets jumped out to an early 4-2 lead (after 5 innings) with Rick Reed (6 1/3 11 6 6 0 4) on the hill. In the 6th, Chicago got 2 runs when Sammy Sosa doubled home Ryne Sandberg, and the next batter, Shawon Dunston, singled home Sosa to tie the game, 4-4. With one out in the following inning, Sandberg followed a Mark Grace single with his 22nd HR of the season. The Mets have had a tough season this year, but they hung tough by re-tying the game in the bottom of the 8th. Todd Hundley smashed his 4th HR (5th career) with Dave Hollins aboard, and the score became 6-6.
Finally, in the 9th, the Cubs got away from the longball, by manufacturing the winning run. Jose Oquendo led off against new reliever Jeff Parrett with a single and promptly stole 2nd base. Bip Roberts singled home Oquendo before the Bipster also stole 2B. Chicago only got the one run in the 9th, but it would prove to be enough as new closer Jay Howell set NY down in order in their half of the inning. Sandberg's 3 hits led the Cubs and raised his season average to .343. NY received 2 hits each from Hundley and Bobby Bonilla, and the Mets were out-hit, 13-7, by Chicago. Final Score: Chicago 7, NY 6 WP- Assenmacher 4-1, LP- Parrett 5-10, SV- Howell (21) HR- Sandberg (22), Hundley (4) G2 In the only game of the 4 to be decided by more than one run, Chicago had to wait until the 12th inning to score multiple runs. Both teams scored early as Chicago tallied a run in the 2nd when Sandberg and Andre Dawson ripped back-to-back doubles to start the inning.
New York returned the favor in the 3rd on Bonilla's no-out, bases-loaded sac fly. The 1-1 score would hold for the next 8 innings as starters Dwight Gooden (6 1/3 6 1 1 1 3) and the Cubs' Darryl Kile (6 4 1 1 6 6) stranded numerous runners before the bullpens clamped things down. The Cubs' 7th was the only inning in which a team got a runner to third base. In the top of the 12th, Andre Dawson's 2-run single provided the final margin of 4-1, but Chicago used 3 walks and 2 HBP to give the Mets' fans the kind of headaches they've endured all season. Wally Whitehurst allowed all 3 runs and all but the final
HBP to take yet another loss. Dawson's hit meant that he was the only player who collected multiple hits in this contest. The Hawk also drove in 3 of the 4 Chicago runs. Final Score: Chicago 4, NY 1, 12 innings WP- Slocumb 1-3, LP- Whitehurst 0-8, SV- Assenmacher (2) HR-
none G3 This game looked like a sure win for the hometown Mets. NY scored in four of the first 6 innings to take a 4-1 lead heading into the 8th inning. Kyle Abbott (7 1/3 7 4 4 0 9) had been on his game, but Chicago rallied when Bip Roberts smacked a 3-run homer with one out. After reliever Anthony Young recorded an out, the Cubs' Grace and Oquendo ripped back-to-back doubles, and suddenly NY's lead had turned into a 5-4 deficit. The Mets went down in order in the 8th, but got a runner to 2B with 2 outs in the 9th. Chicago chose to put the winning run on base (Todd Hundley) to bring in Assenmacher for his 2nd
consecutive save as he induced a groundout from Dave Magadan. Final Score: Chicago 5, NY 4 WP- Drabek 10-8, Young 2-8, SV- Assenmacher (3) HR- Bonilla (13), H.Johnson (5), Hollins (16), Roberts (2) G4 Chicago's Mike Morgan took most of the drama out whether the Cubs would sweep by only allowing a runner to 3B in the 6th and 8th innings. Despite only striking out one Met hitter, Morgan (9 6 0 0 1 1) always got an out when he needed one. NY's Brian Williams (6 5 1 1 1 3) was the hard-luck loser. Sammy Sosa led off the Cubs' 5th with his 5th HR- a ball that looked like it might be just a gapper (1-16 HR, 17-20 2B, 9 split card) when he struck the ball. Nonetheless, Sosa's solo shot ended up being the game's only run. In the finale, NY out-hit Chicago, 7-6, but could only manage 6 singles, a double, and 1 walk as they fell to 22-39 at Shea Stadium. Final Score: Chicago 1, New York 0 WP- Morgan 14-6, LP- B.Williams 3-8 HR- Sosa (5) |
