The Cubs started the series out so well... building it's road winning streak to 8 in a row. But, then the road HR discrepancy popped up again.
G1 The Cubs' Mark Grace and Glenallen Hill led a 16-hit attack by each going 4-for-5 in the 3 and 4 holes. Grace also drove in 3 of Chicago's 7 runs to drive the Cubs' production. This included a key 2-run single in Chicago's 5-run 5th inning which flipped the lead in favor of the Cubs, 3-2. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Darryl Kile (7 6 2 2 1 5) overcame allowing runs in each of the first 2 innings, and gave the winners 7 solid innings. St. Louis's LF Milt Thompson raised his average to .290 with a 3-for-4 effort. On the down side, SS Dave Cochrane committed 3 fielding errors while trying to fill in for the "Wizard."
Final Score: Chicago 7, St.Louis 2 WP- Kile 4-9, LP- Osborne 7-10 HR- none
G2 Chicago starter Frank Castillo (9 3 1 1 0 4) has suffered from poor run support all season (3.42- lowest on the staff), but today he pitched so well, it pretty much didn't matter. The Cubs' scoring in the 1st inning on Sandberg's 2-run HR ended up being all the runs the team would need on this day. Nonetheless, Chicago added 3 insurance runs in the 5th on Glenallen Hill's RBI base hit and Sammy Sosa's 2-run single. Neither team took a walk in this contest, so with only 10 hits and 2 pitching changes in the game, it was a bit surprising the game took 2:34 to finish.
Final Score: Chicago 5, St.Louis 1 WP- Castillo 6-10, LP- Cormier 9-9 HR- Sandberg (23), Zeile (3)
G3 Chicago looked like it would continue to roll when they established a 3rd inning 4-1 lead behind Doug Drabek. The big hits in the 3rd included Dawson's 2-run double and Sandberg's subsequent 2-run homer. But, Drabek struggled with the awful HR tendencies of Busch Stadium. Yeah, you heard that correctly. With a 1-5 HR chance, here's what Drabek dealt with- 1st inning Brian Jordan 3-2 roll, 3 split, solo HR; 4th inning Zeile 6-5 roll, 4 split, 2-run HR; 4th inning Pete O'Brien 5-2 roll, 5 split, 2-run HR. Oh, and after Drabek left, St.Louis added a 4th bp HR in the 9th when Gregg Jefferies benefitted from a 6-2 roll and 2 split card to fashion another 2-run HR. At that point, the Cardinals had a 7-4 lead and all 7 runs were scored on the 4 ballpark homers. Sometimes, it's just not meant to be.
Final Score: St. Louis 8, Chicago 4 WP- Bielecki 3-5, LP- Drabek 10-9, M.Perez (5) HR- Jordan (2), Sandberg (24), Zeile (4), O'Brien (10), Jefferies (9)
G4 The finale ended up being a classic pitcher's duel. Even though Chicago's Mike Morgan (8 6 0 0 0 6) and the Cardinals' Bob Tewksbury (8 2/3 7 0 0 2 3) each fashioned shutouts through 8 innings, neither received a decision in this one. The Cardinals sent their fans home happy when Zeile led off the 9th with a triple and one out later scored on a Jay Howell wild pitch. Chicago committed the only error in the game, but still left 8 men on base compared to the Cardinals 6 LOB. Rey Sanchez (who made the error) led both teams with 3 hits.
Final Score: St. Louis 1, Chicago 0 WP- Stanton 2-2, LP- Slocumb 1-4 HR- none
