Subject: Reds @ Mets
To say that the Reds struggled against the team with the worst record in the majors would be a gross understatement. NYN pitching completely dominated the underachieving Reds throughout the entire series, at least until extra innings rolled around a couple of times.... Game 1: A timely 2-out error by the Reds in the first inning (by a 1B who should make just 2 all year) gave the Mets one run; a timely 2-out error by the Reds in the second fortunately resulted in 2 LOB and no runs; a timely 2-out error by the Reds in the third gave the Mets another run. See any pattern here yet? Those 2 unearned runs would be the only ones allowed by Tim Belcher, and the only ones the Mets would get all day. The Reds clawed back to tie the game 2-2 and we went to extra innings with both teams so far being limited to just 3 hits. Suddenly the Cincy offense erupted for 7 hits in the 10th, beginning the rally against starter Jack Armstrong who was still in the game, and continuing it against a pair of relievers. Final score: 9-2. Greg Harris' 3 effective relief innings earned him the victory. The key to the rally was the agonizing decision to let sub-.200 hitter Freddie Benevides bat with 2 on and 0 out in the 10th; amazingly, he came through with a triple and the belated rout was on. New York went 3 for 34 at the plate, but we donated 8 free passes and 3 errors in order to try to throw this one away. ======================================================== Game 2: Kevin Gross took a shutout into the 5th, and so did David Cone (his lasted until the 7th) because HAL had us rolling only on Cone's sparsely populated card for most of the day. Dave Hollins opened the scoring with a leadoff gopher in the 5th, and a timely blown-x opened the door for 2 more runs and the Mets had a 3-0 lead. The Reds finally eked out a run on a grounder in the 7th, so Mike Schooler wasted no time in giving the run back in the 8th. NYN's Anthony Young blew his first save of the year in the 9th when a couple of RBI hits were sandwiched around a run-scoring passed ball and the game was tied. Greg Harris again put in a very solid 3-inning effort and Bill Doran's home run -- on a split card of 1! -- won it for the Reds in the 11th. Kevin Mitchell made his CIN debut as a pinch-hitter leading off that inning and made an out; with 2 outs the pitcher drew a walk and Doran followed with the winning blast, his 9th of the season. ======================================================== Game 3: Timely rotten defense nearly killed the Reds in the opener, and today the sabotage did prove to be fatal. The game opened badly for the visitors when 3 "earned" runs scored -- all with 2 outs, natch -- as a result of an e0 blowing an x-play. The Mets built a 6-0 lead for Hittable Rick Reed, who was brilliant on the mound during unquestionably the finest start of his career. He tossed a complete game 5-hitter (with just 6 total bases and 2 walks) for his second win of 1992. Tim 'e0' Pugh was the luckless loser for the Reds, fielding and pitching with equal ineffectiveness. Final score: 6-1, a feeble 9th inning sac fly being the only thing separating Reed from his first major-league shutout. Fittingly, Cincy's 9th inning rally was aborted by spectacular x-play successes by Howard '4' Johnson in center field and George '4' Bell in left field. ======================================================== Game 4: Yet another inoffensive performance by the inept Cincinnati lineup, which was shut out until Doc Gooden lost control in the 6th and walked a pair of batters & wild-pitched one of them home. It was the only inning in which the Reds scored, but it was barely enough. Final score: 3-1. CIN starter Greg Swindell had his control (2 BB, 7 K) but not much else as he was hit all over the park. But Harris, and the fact that New York LOBbed 12, saved the day. Harris registered 8.2 scoreless innings in the series, winning 2, saving 1 and lowering his ERA to 1.68 in 80 IP (he does have 5 blown saves, however). Alan |
