Subject: Reds @ Pirates

The unluckiest team in the league plays perhaps its unluckiest series of the year in an apparent attempt to resurrect the Pirates' season....

Game 1: Greg Maddux wasn't exactly a mystery to the Cincy batters (10 hits, 4 runs) but clutch hits remain a mystery, as always.  Still, the Reds had just fought back to take a 4-3 lead at which point Dr. HAL brutalized the Reds pitchers as he has done so often in 1992.

After Tom Browning failed to dodge a couple of bullets, reliever Milt Hill made his season debut and gave up a mere 5 runs in 1 IP.  Mike Schooler, who started off so well with the Reds a few weeks ago, has now become a reliable arsonist and he donated 3 more runs in less than an inning.  Unhittable Dennis Rasmussen gave up 4 hits but accidentally retired a few batters along the way.  Final score: 15-4.

Maddux, normally a weakling at the plate, came one hit away from the cycle against the helpless Reds, and light-hitting SS Jay Bell had a huge day as well (4 2 4 5), as he too came just one hit away from a cycle.  Despite the enormous imbalance in baserunners, we still managed to out-LOB the Buccos, 9-7.

=======================================================

Game 2: No such imbalance today, as the Reds built a 15-8 advantage in total bases -- and naturally couldn't find any way of plating those runners.  Final score: 3-1.  We even had to line into a bases-loaded DP to avoid scoring, but were up to the difficult task.

Bobby Ayala and two relievers held the Pirates to 8 hits, all singles, but when a clutch hit was needed only one team was able to figure out how to deliver, and under those conditions that team is never the Reds.

=======================================================

Game 3: Another day where the underlying stats (total bases, walks, extra-base hits) were about equal -- so of course we lost by the score of 4-0 by LOBbing almost 100% more runners than our opponent.

Kevin Gross had a decent start, and today's massively underachieving reliever Dwayne Henry pushed his ERA over 5.0 with another rotten outing, but none of that mattered since we couldn't purchase a break at the plate at any price.  For the second day in a row the Pittsburgh offense was led by some scrub named Cecil Espy, and non-hitting pitcher Zane Smith not only tossed 8 shutout innings, he went 1 for 3 at the plate and scored twice.  When you play the 1992 Reds, all sorts of miracles can happen.

=======================================================

Game 4: For example, today we managed to allow a pair of extra-base hits to Jose Lind, of all people.  He scored an unearned run on one of them, and that was the ballgame.  Reds lose, 2-1.

Cincy starter Chris Hammond pitched 7 very good innings, allowing just that 1 unearned run, but Schooler choked it away in the 8th when a surgical split card triple was immediately followed by an easy RBI sac bunt by Bell.  The Reds protested, claiming that the league rules mandate a LOB when a runner reaches third with less than 2 outs (a rule we always obey), but alas the protest was not upheld.
