Subject: Blue Jays @ Orioles

The Jays desperately needed a series win against the surging Orioles in order to have any chance of seeing first place again in 1992.  We failed.  As horrible as the split cards were against the Jays -- along with our typical scarcity of clutch hits and Baltimore's 3's and 4's in the field playing four perfect no-hit, no-error games on x-plays -- it's a miracle that we won any games at all....

Game 1: Toronto's first batter of the game had a split card chance at a home run; he drew a 20.  Baltimore's first batter of the game had a split card chance at a home run; of course he got it.  The Jays would have *numerous* chances at split card home runs throughout the series, but would never get even one.  Our splits on baserunning chances were even worse.

We got 7 baserunners against Jim Abbott today, LOBbed 'em all (another theme for the series).  Final score: 4-0, every one of those runs coming on fortuitous split card gophers against Luckless Tim Fortugno; 3 of them came in the BAA 5th to seal the defeat.

====================================================

Game 2: In his 22nd start of 1992, Luckless Todd Stottlemyre finally notched win #6 (but his 4th in a row!) and finally got his record (6-5) above the .500 mark for the first time.  Among that cornucopia of wins, this was somehow just Stottlemyre's first victory of the season against an eastern division opponent.  Final score: a mere 2-1, since we spent most of the day amassing an 11-6 advantage in the LOB column.

The Jays had chances galore against BAA starter Charles Nagy, but tallied only on Davie Winfield's non-split card solo homer in the third, and again on Winfield's RBI single in the 7th.  That was immediately followed by Baltimore's run, spoiling Stottlemyre's chance for his second career shutout in 122 starts.

Tom Henke pitched the 9th and earned his 15th save.

====================================================

Game 3: After losing a couple more runners on the bases (our 'lucky' number today was 18), a perfectly timed wild pitch by Jack Morris in the 4th inning helped give the Orioles a run which, as it turned out, was the ballgame.

Receiving absolutely no support, Morris self-destructed in the 6th.  Pat Hentgen got his Smiley career off to a flying start by immediately choking up 3 runs, all of which were charged to Morris.  Final score: 5-0.  Gene Harris had his first good relief outing for the Jays, after we were comfortably trailing by 5 runs and having no chance to win anyway.

Toronto was held to 4 hits (but 8 total bases) by Mike Mussina, who likely hasn't had many easier starts in 1992.

====================================================

Game 4: Luckless Charlie Leibrandt's record this season hasn't seen the .500 mark at all yet (unless you count 0-0 as .500) despite his atrocious 3.34 ERA.

The first batter of the game for the Orioles had a split card chance at a home run; he got it (where have we seen this before?).  The Jays got runners galore against Ben McDonald who was both hittable and wild but nearly unscored upon as Toronto racked up an 11-5 advantage in the LOB column (where have we seen this before?).

It took until the 5th inning for us to dent the scoreboard at last, tying the game on Robbie Alomar's single.  Then in the 9th, Devo White singled, stole second and scored on Tim Hulett's single by actually beating the throw to the plate (!).  White probably had about a 105% chance to score; it was close, but he made it.

Henke walked and wild-pitched the tying run into scoring position with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th, but struck out the last 2 batters to end the game and save Leibrandt's whopping 6th win of 1992.
