Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox

Both teams played Strand-O-Matic all series long (BOA - 45, TOA - 41) as for once it wasn't just the Jays coming up small in the clutch.  Toronto's #1 ranked defense had a rocky series, while Boston's D played 60 points above their season average on x plays, though a couple of timely miscues weren't helpful to them.  Blue Jay pitchers averaged 6.5 free passes per game, many of whom fortunately became LOB.

It may be too little, too late, but the Blue Jays went to Boston and did what had to be done -- it was hardly pretty, but it counts as 4 wins for the visitors....

Game 1: We made Boston's Mike Gardiner look like a hero for 5+ innings by rolling mainly in his empty 5 column, but we did eke out a couple of runs and Bobby Witt took a 2-0 lead into the 7th before an RBI grounder halved the lead.

Dave Bergman's single+error opened the door for the Jays to get 4 runs in the 8th against Danny Darwin, but we refused to accept the gift and just kept giving runs back -- Doug Linton's major league debut was marked by surgically finding two walks that were the only way to get on base in a column, plus his defense going 2 for 2 on blown x's.  But that 4-spot in the 8th and Boston's 14 LOB made the difference.  Final score: 7-3.

Boston got 10 hits (9 singles, 1 double) and were generously provided with 8 walks, which would *not* be the most we'd issue in one game during the series.

=========================================================

Game 2: Tim Fortugno (Toronto's version of Mike Gardiner) didn't get the kind of cooperation from HAL that Gardiner did, but the offense gave him some room to work with by assaulting Roger Clemens for 6 runs, 11 hits and 3 walks in less than 5 innings.  Final score: 6-2.

Fortugno tossed a complete game and allowed 7 hits (6 of them singles) and 4 free passes (3 of them in a row but none scored) and basically cruised after the offense put 4 runs on the board in the 5th and chased Rocket Man.

=========================================================

Game 3: Felix Fermin tripled his total of triples, coming into today with 1 and leaving with 3, but when Fermin wasn't batting Boston wasn't scoring.  The Jays again stopped plating runners after the middle innings and settled for racking up a ton of LOB, but we got just enough on the scoreboard to win today.  Final score: 3-2.

Pat Hentgen's first major league start wasn't lengthy (5.2 IP) but did result in his first win thanks to Timlin & Henke providing scoreless relief.  Red Sox punching bag John Dopson pitched at least as well as Hentgen, but the winning run scored off of reliever Scott Bankhead (who came close to a 'Perfect Sambito') when he retired the first batter he faced and then gave up a home run to Joe Carter.

=========================================================

Game 4: The one contest in which Boston outhit Toronto, and we gave them 9 walks to go along with their 11 hits (10 singles).  Luckless Charlie Leibrandt was treated about the same way the Jays handled Clemens, and he exited after allowing 7 hits in less than 3 innings.

Three TOA relievers were, except for Doug Jones, wild as hell but not very hittable.  Gene Harris, against whom lefties almost literally cannot reach base, rolled on his card twice -- and of course got on base via walks.

Bret Saberhagen had a good start for the Sox but the bullpen let him down, and John Olerud's second home run of the day (it could easily have been 3) tied the game in the 8th and back to back doubles in the 10th by Fermin-like weaklings Manny Lee and Jeff McKnight won it.  Final score: 4-3.

After 2 losses in his first 4 appearances for the Jays -- that's exactly why we traded for him, right? -- Jones finally did something positive and won a game.

Alan
