Padres break out the longball and the brooms to just about end the western division chase. Garry Sheffield went 8-13 with 2 2b 4 hrs and 4 runs and 11 rbi in the series... and didn't even play the last game. game 1: A game that was tied at 2 into the bottom of the 7th ended up an 8-5 Padres win. McGee's bases loaded squeeze put the Giants up 3-2 in the 7th. Sheffield's 2nd double of the game tied it in the 8th and then Cianfrocca followed with an rbi single to put the Padres up. Storm Davis came on and pulled the perfect Sambito as Canseco greeted him with a bp homer to tie it in the 8th. Dan Walters led off the 9th with a homer and Sheffield added a 3 run shot to put the Padres up 4. After Habyan loaded the bases with 2 outs, Maddux walked in a run before getting the last out for his 7th save. game 2: Teams had mirror first innings. Lead off man singled and moved to second on an out (SD bunted, SF got a gbC) and the #3 hitter made an out. #4 then had an rbi single (sheffield and daulton). In the 3rd, Sheffield launched a 3 run homer to finish off the scoring even though Rodriquez tried to make things interesting in the 8th and 9th. With 1 hit in his 5 column you knew the lead off batter would find it. Just to prove it wasn't a fluke the third batter he faced also got that same roll. He managed to work his way out of that and around a 2 out single in the 9th to get his 8th save. game 3: Sheffield led off the 2nd with a homer and Hurst helped himself with an rbi single in the inning. SF tied in in the bottom of the inning on a groundout and a solo homer by Nate Colbert. Alright, it was Craig Colbert but might as well been Nate. That was Craig's 2nd homer of the season (and 2nd rbi) and both have been against San Diego. Curtis homered in the 3rd and then Curtis and Sheffield went back-to-back in the 5th and it was suddenly 6-2. Padres added 2 in the 6th and one more in the 9th while the Giants got 1 against Maddux in the 8th to make the final 9-3. game 4: Frank Seminar gets the award for luckiest pitcher of this season. As terrible as he is against lefties, the Giants threw a mostly right handed lineup against him and he was nearly flawless. The only run SF got was an unearned homerun. Yes you read right. After Tingley dropped a foul pop, Matt Williams rolled a 1-2 for an auto hr. As mentioned, Sheffield didn't play this game so you knew his replacement (Caminiti) would be the star of this one. The SD 7th started out harmless enough. Discarsina walked and was caught stealing (58% jump 11% out) and Reynolds grounded out. Fernandez walked and Gwynn singled before Caminiti doubled in a run. Gwynn was thrown out trying to score. McGriff led off the 8th with a homer to make the final 3-1. Maddux pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his 3rd save of the series and 9th overall. |
