Subject: Chicago @ Montreal

You might think that Doug Drabek could've made the difference in this NL East race.  Maybe he has, but not in the right way: 6-5, 4.62, 101 IP, 16 HRA + a loss in the most crucial series of the Cubs' season.

G1 featured the only lopsided score of the whole crucial series.  With the Cubs leading, 3-1, after 5 innings, Chicago PH for starter Pete Harnisch (5 1 1 1 2 4) despite him being incredibly hard to hit on this day.  The pinch-hitter (Alex Arias) walked to load the bases with no outs.    Then Chicago started to ring the bell.  Bip Roberts walked to force in a run, Chris Jones singled in another run, and Mark Grace drew yet another bases-loaded BB.  Andre Dawson's groundball fielder's choice accounted for the 4th and final run of the inning.  Four Cubs' relievers shut Montreal down the rest of the way as the Expos only managed 3 hits all game.  Glenallen Hill (who had a big series) went 3-for-5 in this one.

Final Score: Chicago 8, Montreal 1
WP- Harnisch 17-7, LP- Hill 17-6
HR- Baerga (19)

G2 was an interesting back-and-forth affair.  Chicago got on the board first with a 2-run HR by Ryne Sandberg in the 4th. Montreal immediately replied with lone runs in the 4th (Alou RBI single), 5th (Barberie RBI single), and 6th (Cordero RBI single) to take a 3-2 lead after 6 innings.  In the 8th Chicago tied it on a wild pitch that scored Chris Jones who had tripled to lead off the inning.  Then PH Jerome Walton singled home Doug Dascenzo who had walked earlier.  From there, 3 relievers kept Montreal at bay over the final 2 frames.  Bip Roberts (3-for-5) had the best game for the Cubs whereas Larry Walker, Alou, and Dave Martinez each went 2-for-4 for the hometown team.

Final Score: Chicago 4, Montreal 3
WP- Slocumb 2-4, X.Hernandez 10-3
HR- Sandberg (31)

G3 In my estimation, this was the crucial matchup.  Lefty Chris Nabholz (5 4 2 1 3 2) and Cubs' righty Doug Drabek (6 2/3 6 4 4 2 7) turned in a 2-2 tie after 6 innings.  In the bottom of the 7th, Chuck McElroy relieved Drabek with 2 on and 2 out.  The lefthander walked  Bret Barberie and Jeff Bagwell to force in the go-ahead run before Larry Walker singled home 2 decisive insurance runs.  Chicago would dent the scoreboard in the 9th on back-to-back doubles by Jose Oquendo and Gary Pettis, but the rally was shortlived.  Walker was the only player with 2 hits in the game, and teammate Marquis Grissom led off the game with a homer for the home town club.

Final Score: Montreal 5, Chicago 3
WP- Fassero 4-3, LP- Drabek 13-11, SV- Rojas (39)
HR- Grissom (13)

G4 The Chicago club realized that the finale was a must-win situation.  To split in Montreal like the Cubs had at home last week would basically seal their fate because 4 games out with 12 games to go is pretty much too much to ask.  This game provided a bit of everything.  Cubs' starter Mike Morgan (5  5 1 1 0 0) pitched well and, due to a 4-run uprising in the 5th, left with a 4-1 lead in the 6th.  With the Chicago bullpen now in, firstbaseman Bagwell deposited the very first pitch he saw over the LF wall. Nonetheless, the score remained 4-2 until the 9th inning.  Jay Howell was summoned to nail down his 20th straight save since being acquired.  Carlos Baerga singled to begin the 9th and then Moises Alou  came through with the clutch hit- slicing a triple to score Baerga.  Spike Owen wasted little time singling home Alou to tie the game.  Howell finally got Ron Karkovice to ground into a double play before Wil Cordero also grounded out to send the game to extra innings.

Chicago got right to work in the 10th when Juan Bell drew a walk from John Wetteland.    After a sacrifice, the Expos' summoned Bil Sampen to face PH Chris Jones.  Jones singled to center, but Marquis Grissom nailed Bell at home for the 2nd out of the inning.  Rick Wilkins grounded out to end the threat.  Keith Shepherd allowed a 2-out single to Bagwell, but closed out the bottom of the 10th.  The Cubs began another threat in the 11th when CF Gary Pettis singled and stole 2nd.  After a failed sacrifice by Sosa, Grace came through with an RBI single to center.  This time Grissom couldn't gun down Pettis, and when Shepherd set down Montreal 1-2-3, the Cubs had a hard-earned 5-4 win.  Glenallen Hill and Alou led the two respective teams with 3 hits apiece.  (Hill went 6-for-11 in the series.)

Finals Score: Chicago 5, Montreal 4, 11 innings
WP- Shepherd 2-0, LP- Sampen 0-1
HR- Bagwell (13)
