Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees, game 1

In which the Blue Jays find a unique way to choke (and I thought we'd seen them all)....

Toronto's second batter of game had a split-card chance at a home run, but HAL showed us how things were going to be -- he drew a 20.

After two uneventful innings, Wade Boggs got a single (split card: 1) with one out and the fleet-footed third sacker promptly doubled his season total of stolen bases (split card: 1). Naturally no time whatsoever was wasted in delivering an automatic 2-base RBI single, though Boggs undoubtedly would have beaten any split-card throw to the plate.

But in the top of the 4th Dave Winfield and Joe Carter solved our old teammate Willie Blair and reached him for back-to-back solo homers, making the score 2-1 though we failed to capitalize further and stranded a pair to end the threat.

The lead lasted for 2 batters; scrap-heap catcher Troy Afenir singled and that was followed but another delightful split card gopher by somebody named Andy Stankiewicz.  The next batter walked and then Boggs executed a perfect hit & run play to put runners on the corners with 1 out.  But Boggs, still thinking he was Lou Brock, got picked off and Todd Stottlemyre then fanned Roberto Kelly.

There was no snappy comeback this time, just more disaster.  Jeff McKnight opened the 5th with a single, so Kevin McReynolds took the opportunity to line into an immediate DP.  Naturally, the next batter followed with what would have been an RBI (maybe 2) double, and just as naturally was LOBbed.

Dave Clark got one of NYA's worse split cards (a 2) for a single, and then McReynolds, not happy with mere sabotaging the offense, choked up an x-chart single + error to Don Mattingly that plated Clark and sent Mattingly all the way to third, where he was hardly about to be stranded.  It took one batter to make the score 5-2, and that was all for Stottlemyre, who was replaced by Tim Fortugno.

But with 2 on in the TOA 7th, McReynolds partially redeemed himself by tying the game with a 3-run homer!  Olerud then reached on a Boggs error and Winfield doubled him to third with still just one out.  Surely we'd find a way to score some more.

Surely you must be joking.  Legendary clutch performer Joe Carter came up with a weak grounder that advanced no one, and another unfriendly split card turned a potential Pat Borders RBI single into an out.  Not only that, Winfield turned out to be our final baserunner of the day, as Rich Monteleone and Greg Cadaret combined for 2.2 innings of 100% perfect relief.

Toronto's Fortugno was no slouch either on this day, providing 3.2 innings of hitless relief.  So HAL had to find another way for him to choke and, of course, he did precisely that.

Johnny Bench Afenir opened the NYA 8th by intimidating Fortugno into walking him, and pinch runner Jacob Brumfield swiped second.  Eddie Stanky bunted him to third for the first out but Fortugno momentarily rose to the occasion and blew away Lance Blankenship on 3 pitches to set up a clutch situation for Boggs.

Boggs failed to deliver.

But that didn't matter -- HAL was well aware that Boggs had been slumping for a few innings (pickoff, error) so he had Fortugno simply balk home the losing run before Boggs grounded out.  Final score: 6-5.  Both teams made 2 errors, but we got just 1 unearned run while generously donating 2.  Just some of the "little things" which go into choking away a pennant.

The Jays will now have to muster up all of our fortitude and determination -- just so we can keep the A.L. East race close enough to become the first team in Smiley history to lose three pennants by exactly one game (1983, 1991), breaking the tie in that category which Toronto now shares with -- but of course! -- the Cincinnati Reds (1973, 1975) and becoming the first team to accomplish that enviable feat two years in a row.

The Jays did once *win* a pennant by one game, in 1985.  Was that an example of a rousing come-from-behind surge to the top which we can learn from and use here?

Not exactly.  The Blue Jays lost their final 7 games of the season that year in a narrowly unsuccessful attempt to blow a 6-game lead in the final week.

Alan
