Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees, game 2
Another **EPIC** choke -- against the last place team in the division -- by the unparalleled masters of the art.... Our old buddy Jimmy Key and his 5+ ERA took the mound for the Yankees today against Bobby Witt, and who could have doubted that Key would pitch brilliantly, exactly as he always failed to do in critical contests while in a Toronto uniform? Key and Witt matched goose eggs for 5 innings, Key being assisted nicely by 2 rally killing DPs which the Jays hit into in the first 2 innings. There would be no more DPs however, we would substitute lots and lots of costly LOB instead. Toronto finally broke through in the 6th when Joe Carter had a chance at a home run (split card: 20) but at least delivered a sac fly; Dave Winfield was intentionally walked (*THREE* times today -- HAL knows very well that we have only one clutch hitter among all this talent) and Ed Sprague followed with a split card of 19 to forgo an RBI. With Dave Righetti now pitching, Tim Hulett gave us a 2-0 lead when he singled home Robby Alomar in the 7th but Jose Vizcaino was gunned down at the plate via yet another one of our typically atrocious split cards. That's OK though; one run can't possibly make any difference in a baseball game. Carter singled home a run later in the frame, and Winfield -- they couldn't IW him this time since the bases were loaded -- batted with 2 outs and left all 3 runners in place. The lead reached 4-0 in the 8th when Alomar solo-homered. And then with just 6 outs left to get, the Jays' true abilities shone forth in all their glory. Bobby Witt's own error opened the 8th for the Yankees and the runner reached second on a blown-x wild pitch and then third on a groundout. He strolled home seconds later on not a mere single, but a surgical split card triple by Boggs. The 19's and 20's must have all been used up. With the score now 4-1, that was all for Witt. Enter ace reliever Doug Jones, who with every luckless appearance makes the Toronto GM look like such a genius by underachieving his card by several million miles. And so it was again today: 1 batter faced, 1 run allowed. Goodbye, Jonesie. Gene Harris, another massively underachieving acquisition, then somehow induced a DP to stop the bleeding at 4-2. Harris would continue to pitch for a while, but he had retired his last batter. After the TOA offense choked up a couple more LOB in the top of the 9th, we proceeded to do what we do better than anyone: In the blink of an eye, a walk and a single put the tying run on base with nobody out. Literally every pitcher on the Toronto roster quickly announced that they were "fatigued" ("fatigued" as in "terrified") except one -- the guy who pitched 3.2 innings yesterday -- so on came Fortugno. Pinch hitter Danny Tartabull got a 2B 1-4 fb(B) 5-20. Do you really need to ask what kind of split card he got? The supply of microscopic digits is never exhausted when the Jays are pitching. Tie game. A groundout put the losing run at third with 1 out and the next batter had a split card chance at an RBI single. And he missed it! But HAL decided that even the "out" result was a "single over the head of the outfielder" and the Jays had done it again, defying all the odds! That 4-0 lead what had existed moments earlier became another routinely devastating 5-4 loss. LOB: TOA - 12, NYA - 5. RLISP 2-out: TOA - 11 (FIVE by Winfield alone), NYA - 4. Errors were a 1-1 tie. Unearned runs allowed: TOA - 1,NYA - 0. What do you call a reliever with a line that reads: 3 IP, 4 hits, 5 walks, 1 home run, and 3 runs allowed? The key there is *only* 3 runs allowed. You call him "winner" when he puts up those numbers against by far the chokingest team in the league. Alan |
