Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees, games 3 & 4 and files

The Jays somehow managed to rebound against the 6th place team, but a series which would have been a sweep for a team with any luck whatsoever still ended up as a disastrous season-terminating split....

Game 3: Started off normally enough: 3 TOA batters got Worst Possible Columns and NYA's first batter had a 1-4 split card chance at a home run with Luckless Charlie Leibrandt on the mound.  Don't even ask.  1-0 Yanks, just that quick.

Devon White's single in the 3rd tied the game but we still LOBbed the bases loaded for the umpteenth time.

The tense contest remained knotted into the 8th, when the Yankees got runners to the corners with 1 out thanks to HAL surgically finding the worst fielder on the major league's best defense at the worst possible time.  But Leibrandt got Roberto Kelly to pop up and then left in favor of (gulp) Doug Jones.  Who didn't choke for once in his damn life and fanned Mike Gallego on 3 pitches.

Toronto LOBbed the bases loaded for the umpteenth+1 time in the 9th, but not before we eked out a run when New York's worst fielder committed an error with 2 outs.

Jones allowed 3 fly balls in the 9th, probably all of them to the warning track, but all were caught and the mighty Jays were finally able to eke out a victory in Yankee Stadium by the count of 2-1.  Leibrandt gave up just 5 baserunners in 7.2 innings, and came one typically unfortunate split card away from actually having something to show for it.

=============================================================

Game 4: A single & 2 walks produced the expected zero runs for the Jays in the first, but we did build a 2-0 lead via a McReynolds solo homer in the second and an Al Davis RBI single in the 3rd.  Davis has played very well for Toronto, and we didn't give up a #2 pick to get him.

Jack Morris proceeded to choke away every bit of that lead and more with some help from Clutch Carter, whose 2-base error became an unearned run when a hit with -- of course -- 2 outs sent that undeserved runner home.  A Mattingly homer tied the game in the 4th and a 2-out triple by superstar scrub Troy Afenir screwed the Jays once more.

Clutch Carter failed to get a runner home from third in the 5th but a very unlikely hero got us tied back up in the 6th.  Perhaps establishing a new role for himself, Luckless C. Leibrandt pinch-ran for Davis after he walked to open the inning, then Leibrandt astoundingly failed to be gunned down at the plate by a split card when McReynolds doubled!!!

Finally the team who held first place in the division for 90% of the season got the last place team to fall apart:

Mattingly's error put 2 on with 0 out in the 7th and Robby Alomar -- who had been choking 100% of the time up to now -- was instructed to bunt instead of routinely hitting into an out or a triple play.  The bunt became a single, and even though zero clutch hits followed, two sac flies did and we had a 5-3 lead.

In the 8th, the Jays scored 3 times, also without any clutch hits -- or any hits at all.  We didn't even swing the bat (walk, walk, bunt, walk, walk, wild pitch, walk, balk).

Morris gave up an obligatory gopher to Dave Clark in the bottom of the 9th but 8-4 was as close as New York could get, and even that was far closer than was warranted.  LOB: TOA - 11, NYA - 4.  The Jays also RLISP'ed FOURTEEN runners with 2 outs.  A season tally isn't available, but there's no way anyone but the Jays is leading in that dismal stat.

Alan
