Julio Valera went up against Jack Armstrong. Valera was up to the task in this important game with pennant race implications. He pitched 7 strong innings and was supported with 2 more scoreless innings from Xavier Hernandez. Expos scored twice in the first inning (which turned out to be enough) and built a 7-0 lead after 5 innings. Armstrong gave up too many baserunners and fell to 6-11 on the season.
Expos now have a 3 game lead over the Cubs with both teams having four games left to play. Expo magic number is two.
