With a furious finish, Chicago will fall shy of a playoff spot despite adding Drabek and Howell as pitching upgrades. G1 Chicago came out fast in the opener- scoring 4 times in the 1st inning. MVP candidate Ryne Sandberg clubbed a 3-run homer to get the Cubs off the right way and Gary Pettis followed with a triple before scoring on Andre Dawson's ground ball. Atlanta scored 2 in the 3rd and 1 in the fourth off of Cubs' starter Pete Harnisch (7 6 3 3 2 8) but would get no closer. Pettis came through again in the 6th inning with a leadoff home run, and Chicago added 2 more runs in the 8th to solidify the win. Braves' starter Chuck Finley (2/3 4 4 4
0 0) lost his chance for a .500 season with his bad beginning. Final Score: Chicago 7, Atlanta 3 WP- Harnisch 19-7, LP- Finley 11-13 HR- Sandberg (32), Pendleton (19), Pettis (2) G2 Atlanta took the early lead this time as the Braves scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings on Jeff Treadway's RBI double and Ron Gant's RBI single. The Cubs shrugged this 2-0 deficit off though when the 5th inning began. Dwight Smith began the inning with a solo home run, and before the inning ended, Chicago scored 8 more times to take an insurmountable 9-2 lead. The Cubs sent 13 hitters to the playe and used a combination of 7 hits and 3 walks to score 9 runs. The 5th Cubs pitcher was chosen by the official scorer as the winner, while Cliff Brantley (4 1/3 6 5 5 1 1) lost his 1st decision of '92. Ryne Sandberg (3 1 1 3) homered for the 2nd consecutive game. Final Score: Chicago 10, Atlanta 2 WP- Delucia 3-2, LP- Brantley 0-1 HR- D.Smith (7), Sandberg (33) G3 may have been the critical game for Chicago's season. 51 players were used in this game, and it was a wild affair. There was plenty of early scoring as Chicago led, 6-4, after 6 innings with both starters (Doug Drabek and Brian Fisher) already departed. In fact, when Fisher left after recording just 5 outs, the Braves' 8th pitcher, erstwhile starter Chuck Finley, worked his 2nd inning in the top of the 7th with Atlanta's bullpen being completely exhausted already. After Finley pitched a 2nd scoreless inning, Atlanta pulled to within, 6-5, in the bottom of the 7th on PH David Justice's leadoff homer. Chicago got that run back in the top of the 8th off of Tom Glavine when Andre Dawson homered. Down 7-5, Atlanta rallied. In the bottom of the 8th, Jeff Blauser doubled to score ahead of a Ron Gant single. After an out was recorded, Terry Pendleton walked, and Gant was balked home to tie the game, 7-7. One out later, Greg Olson singled home Davis, and the Braves had the lead, 8-7. The Cubs came right back in the 9th to tie the game against the last Braves'pitcher John Smoltz. Actually, position player Jordan Schaefer was called on with 2 outs, whereupon Dwight Smith doubled home Gary Pettis who had tripled. On the play, Glenallen Hill also had a 1-17 chance to score, but had to draw another split when the 1st card caused Olson to block the plate (1-6). The go-ahead runner was
out at home and the inning was over. Atlanta received back-to-back singles in the bottom of the 9th by Mark Lemke and Otis Nixon, and one out later, Paul Assenmacher's wild pitch ended the game as Lemke raced home. I don't know how 12 pitchers were used in this contest by Atlanta or how a position player was called upon to pitch with 2 outs in the 9th and the season on the line, but sometimes SOM defies explanation. Final Score: Atlanta 10, Chicago 9 WP- J.Schaefer 1-0, LP- Assenmacher 6-2 HR- Roberts (5), E.Davis (6), Justice (34), Dawson (18) G4 It looked
like Atlanta might go on to win 2 in a row when Pendleton doubled home Gant in the 6th inning to put the Braves up, 3-1. But, the scoring was just beginning. With Smoltz (6 2/3 9 3 2 1 5) tiring after having pitched the day before, Mark Grace singled home one run, and Pendleton's costly error allowed the tying run to score in the 7th inning. Now with the score at 3-3, Blauser singled home Nixon, and Atlanta reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the 7th . Behind 4-3, Chicago scored the final runs of the game in the 8th. The first two batters made outs, but Rick Wilkins singled and PH Chris Jones walked. PH Sammy Sosa then singled home Wilkins and Jones came around to score on an Eric Davis error. 3 Cubs' relievers set down the final 6 Braves' hitters and Chicago took 3 of 4 games in Atlanta. Final Score: Chicago 5, Atlanta 4 WP- Bullinger 5-4, LP- Boever 3-9, SV- Howell (30) HR- none |
