Subject: 1992 NLCS, game one
The series is being played at league HQ by owner agreement. Andy Benes matched up against Ken Hill as the series opened in Montreal, but neither they nor any other player you've ever heard of had nearly as much impact on today's outcome as a budding rookie superstar catcher named Dan Walters. Though he had only limited playing time during the 1992 season, this apparent future Hall of Famer hit a mere .341 with a slugging percentage of .602. What he did today made those numbers look downright puny, and he even added a new element to his game -- speed, or at least the threat of it -- in San Diego's 3-2 victory. The curtain rose on The Walters Show with the contest still scoreless in the 3rd. Leading off the inning, Walters carefully worked the count against Hill and then laced a double down the left field line. Benes bunted to third base and Bret Barberie's only play was at first. Harold Reynolds lofted a fly to left for the second out, but Walters raced home with the first run of the game. The show was so successful that almost an exact encore was played out two frames later (a Larry Walker home run had tied the game in the 4th, by the way). Walters again led off, but the wary Hill was more careful this time and walked him on 5 pitches. Walters, who has not yet attempted even one stolen base during his career, faked a dash for second and drew a pickoff throw from the startled Hill -- and it was called a balk! Benes laid down another outstanding bunt and Reynolds again delivered the run without getting a hit. He grounded sharply to Barberie at third, who was as rattled as his pitcher and he bobbled the ball; Reynolds was safe on the error and the Padres had a 2-1 lead on an unearned run. The score was still 2-1 in the 7th when Guess Who led off again. Not wanting to again walk the speedy catcher, this time Hill wasn't careful enough -- he grooved a fastball and Walters launched it out of the park to make the score 3-0! Hill got 2 outs but then allowed 2 more hits and was yanked from the mound at that point. Jeff Fassero walked the bases loaded but induced Fred McGriff to fly out. With Benes having been pinch-hit for, Carlos Baerga and Spike Owen singled off of reliever Jose Melendez to put 2 on with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th, but Ron Karkovice whiffed and pinch hitter Sean Berry popped up. With 2 outs and nobody on on the Padre 8th, Walters delivered his third extra-base hit of the day (a double off of Xavier Hernandez) though he would not score this time. Down 3-1, the Expos rallied in the 9th. Baerga sprinted to third when his 1-out line drive single to center off of Mike Maddux rolled through the legs of Dave Gallagher and went to the wall. Moises Alou popped up but Greg Colbrunn came through with an RBI single. John Habyan was summoned from the pen and faced rookie pinch hitter Wil Cordero, who grounded to short to end it. Final score: 3-2. Walters' line for the day read 3 for 3 with 8 total bases (a 2.667 slugging percentage) and he scored all 3 San Diego runs & drove in 1. Reynolds had the other 2 RBI though he went 0 for 3 on the day. Alan |
