Jimmy Jones hit and pitched his way to a 6-2 win as the San Diego Padres closed out the Montreal Expos and now move on to face the ALCS winner in the 1992 World Series.

This contest was far closer in terms of hits and total bases than it was in the run column, but the Padres made very efficient use of their baserunners by LOBbing only 4 out of 13.

A sac fly in the 3rd was followed by a 2-out, 2-run triple by Fred McGriff and the home team had a quick 3-0 lead against MON starter Chris Nabholz.  One pitch into the top of the 4th the score became 3-1 as Larry Walker homered for the second time in the series.

Jones singled in the 4th (his second hit of the day) after Benito Santiago had walked, both runners advanced on a fly out, and shortstop Tony Fernandez came through with another pair of 2-out RBI for San Diego as Jones scored (his second run of the day) to make the score 5-1.

With the score now 6-1, the Expos attempted to rally in the 8th after Jones was lifted in favor of Jose Melendez.  Marquis Grissom led off with a single and Bret Barberie walked.  Jeff Bagwell singled home a run, but Melendez retired the next 3 batters and then all 3 Expos in the 9th to preserve the 6-2 win.

San Diego's Chad Curtis continued to be a menace -- to himself -- on the bases.  He tried to stretch a triple into a home run in the 5th and failed, then was caught stealing (for the second game in a row) in the 8th.  During the regular season, Curtis had set a league record for most SB in a season (29) without a CS, shattering the mark set by Jim Rivera of the 1957 Cubs, who went 20-0.

Montreal batters hit just .210 in the series and drew just 3 walks -- all of them in game 3 -- as the Padres compiled a 1.00 team ERA.  The Expos did better than the Padres on x plays, converting all 7 while San Diego succeeded on a mere 86%.
