Subject: Opening Day report from Dodger Stadium
Last year the Reds had the most talent in the division, but underachieved miserably and were nowhere near a pennant race. This year is guaranteed to be different -- the Reds no longer have large quantities of talent, but our luck remains the worst in the league. 1993 is shaping up as an utter disaster, and it took us just one game to illustrate that point nicely. Staff aces Mark Langston and Jose Rijo took the mound for their respective teams; one of them pitched pretty well (7 IP, 6 hits, 2 walks) while the other was battered all over the park for 12 hits. Since the better performance came from the Cincy starter, naturally he lost the game. The Cincy offense started in efficiently-luckless form, hitting into THREE rally-killing DPs in just the first four innings. We kicked that habit eventually, in order to be able to reach double digits in LOB. Los Angeles broke on top in the 4th when ex-Red Scott Fletcher drew a free pass, stole second, and scored when a well-aimed x-play went right at our worst fielder, who of course botched it. It would be our only blown-x of the day, but it was perfectly timed to result in critical damage. The next frame the Dodgers made it 2-0 after a leadoff double and no further baserunners (sac bunt, sac fly). Cincy got RISP (and left them there) in the 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th but didn't dent the scoreboard until Kevin Mitchell homered leading off the 9th. Too bad he didn't bat later in the inning, AFTER we loaded the bases and, in typical form, left all 3 of those runners out there as the game ended. Final score: 2-1. Roberto Hernandez replaced Langston with 2 on and 2 outs in the 9th, walked Hal Morris to load the bases but got Barry Larkin to find the surgical out in a loaded column to send the hapless Reds to our first of numerous narrow defeats in 1993.
