Game 2: While the Reds will undoubtedly lose almost every close contest, we'll break the monotony from time to time by getting stomped by larger margins. The Cincy hitters were just rolling along, getting split cards in our customary range (20, 20, 20, 19) but we were only down by the count of 1-0 in the fourth when we suddenly turned a walk & 3 singles (no splits cards involved) into 2 runs and had our first lead of the season to choke away. It didn't take long: with a man on the LAN 5th, Cory Snyder rolled a HR 1-5, flyout 6-20. Of course he didn't miss, and our short-lived lead was permanently erased. CIN starter Tim Pugh's mediocre 6-inning stint came to an end when he was pinch-hit for, and a hapless victim by the name of Larry Luebbers made his Smiley debut, which went like this: fortuitous split card single, surgical split card double, automatic single, yet another split card single, and finally a 2-base bunt-error by the thoroughly rattled rookie pitcher, who was then carried into the clubhouse on a stretcher. With 3 already runs in and 2 more just waiting to score, soon to be ex-Cincy reliever Greg Harris quickly took care of that. Harris faced mighty slugger Joey Cora, a batter who had spent parts of 5 seasons in the majors with a total of 0 home runs, but who would bulk up and smash a whopping 2 of them in nearly 700 MLB plate appearances in 1993. So what happened here? Surely you must have guessed it -- another surgical split card and a 3-run gopher by a player who weighs maybe 135 pounds soaking wet. Exit Greg Harris, permanently. The Cincy offense LOBbed a few runners after that just to keep in practice for a close game, but their hearts really weren't in it. Final score: 9-1. ========================================================================= Game 3: Number one pick John Smiley made his Reds debut in sub-mediocre fashion, giving up 9 hits in just 6 innings, but at least there were no extra-base hits among them and only 2 runners scored. We used up a month's worth of good split cards (2) and notched a pair of ballpark home runs, solo naturally, and took a 2-1 lead in the 7th. Which Smiley wasted no time in blowing. The last 2 singles he allowed came leading off the bottom of the 7th and Jerry Spradlin's first major league pitch resulted in a game-tying sac fly. Our misfortune with split cards certainly extended to baserunning, with our players nailed left and right while L.A. ran wild. They got a little too cocky later in the 7th though, with Mike Piazza attempting a SB and becoming the only one of 8 Dodger runners in the series NOT to succeed. Barry Larkin came in primarily for defense for the Reds moments before we choked the 2-1 lead away, but he singled in the 9th and narrowly beat a plate block attempt by Piazza on a throw that never should have been close (giving us a 3-2 lead), then Larkin converted a pair of x-grounders to open the bottom of the 9th. Although rookie Todd Jones then proceeded to put the tying run in scoring position (single + yet another stolen base), he got Chris Gwynn to fly out to preserve a rare Cincinnati victory!
