Subject: Opening Day report from Tiger Stadium

The Toronto Blue Jays are going to score *A LOT* of runs in 1993, but even on a day where we collected more hits than any other team in any other game (except one) in the past 5 seasons we STILL almost found a way to lose....

The Jays got "only" 2 hits in the first inning (we averaged 2.67 hits/inning today) and zero runs thanks to a timely GIDP, and HAL wasted no time in resuming his chronic merciless treatment of Toronto pitchers.  Juan Guzman, having defied HAL in 1992 to the point of amazingly winning the A.L. Cy Young award, was beaten to death from just about his first pitch of the season.

Only five pitches into the 1993 season, 3 batters had already singled and 1 had scored.  The next batter took a few pitches, but sure found one he liked -- bang!  4-0, just that quick.  Mickey Tettleton made it 5 hits in a row but then foolishly tried to steal second and handed the luckless Toronto hurler a free out.  Rickey Henderson then walked and waltzed over to third on a pair of pathetically easy stolen bases.  But Cecil Fielder then flew out and Devon White gunned Rickey at the plate (!).  If Detroit had been a little more careful on the basepaths, they would probably still be batting in the first.

Toronto eked out a run on 3 hits in the second, and Guzman retook the mound simply because his manager was curious as to whether he'd EVER get anyone out on his own.  It seemed unlikely -- first batter: walk, second batter: single.  But Guzman did record a few outs shortly thereafter, to the astonishment of all present.

And then the Toronto bats took a cue from the Tigers and finally came to life.  Six hits in the TOA 3rd plated 5 runs, vanquished DEA starter Scott Sanderson, and gave us a 6-4 lead.

Joe Carter missed an easy (ha) split card home run but tripled home a pair in the 4th and Robbie Alomar launched a 2-run homer in the 5th to make it 10-4.  And then 14-4 via 4 singles, a double & a walk in the 7th.

The final was 15-7 and the only reason it wasn't closer -- despite our 24 hits and 33 total bases -- was because the Tigers LOBbed 16 runners (to our mere 10).  Detroit collected 16 hits, 14 of them singles, and were generously provided with TEN free passes from a ridiculously inept ex-Cy Young winner and a bullpen that was nearly as laughable; wilder but slightly less hittable.

Starters Guzman and Sanderson combined for 7 IP, 23 hits, 11 runs, 4 BB, 5 K.  Toronto batted .490 for the game, and Detroit a comparatively anemic .410.  The "Arena Baseball" era has apparently arrived one year early.

Alan
