Subject: Florida @ Pittsburgh

After losing the road lid-lifter in the Steel City, the Marlins played 2 more 1-run games, but were once again burned by the walk-off home run.

G2 This was the best pitching effort of the series on both sides.  Florida's Chris Hammond (6 1/3 8 1 1 1 5) squared off vs. Bob Walk (5 2/3 5 4 4 1 3), and both pitchers were on their games early.  With a scoreless contest heading to the 5th inning, the Marlins rallied for 2 runs with 1 out when Darryl Whitmore homered to score Benito Santiago.  One inning later, the Marlins knocked out Walk when Mattias Carrillo doubled home to runs to extend their lead to 4-0.

Would 4 runs be enough?  The Pirates decided to test the safety of the lead in the 7th.  After Dave Henderson homered, Andy Van Slyke followed with a one-out single.  Dave Weathers was summoned from the bullpen because it seemed Chris Hammond may have run out of gas.  Van Slyke was promptly thrown out attempting to steal, and that threat was squashed.  Pittsburgh came right back in the 9th.  With Todd Worrell on for his first save opportunity in franchise history, Merced, Kevin Young, and Henderson all singled to pull within 4-2 with no one out.  Andy Tomberlin flew out for the 1st out (after Henderson stole 2B), and the runners remained at 2nd and 3rd.  Lonnie Smith than hit a fly ball that scored Young, but Henderson made a foolish baserunning decision and was thrown out for the final out at third base.  That gave Worrell the final out he needed and Florida had its first ever road victory.

Final Score: Florida 4, Pittsburgh 3
WP- Hammond 1-0, LP- Walk 0-1, SV- Worrell (1)
HR- Whitmore (1), D.Henderson (1)

G3 In the rubber game, Charlie Hough (7 6 3 3 5 2) of Florida and Pittsburgh lefty Steve Cooke (7 2/3 6 3 3 0 8) matched lines fairly evenly through their time on the mound.  Pittsburgh held a 3-2 lead after 7 innings, b8t an Orestes Destrade RBI double followed a passed ball that allowed Jeff Conine to score provided the Marlins with a 4-3 lead, Florida turned things over to its shaky bullpen, and PIttsburgh promptly tied things in its half of the 8th.  Don Slaught's one-out single scored Al Martin who had singled and stolen both 2nd and 3rd bases.  With the game tied, 4-4, neither team scored in the 9th inning and the game headed to extra innings.  Florida did not score in the top of the inning despite being provided a baserunner due to a Carlos Garcia error.  In the bottom of the 10th, Al Leiter was summoned to face Orlando Merced and Andy Van Slyke.  However, Pittsburgh pinch-hit Lonnie Smith for Merced and "Skates" pulled the 1 on the 1-4 split for a ballpark home run, and once again the Pirates had a walk-off victory.

Cooke led the Pirates by going 2-for-2 with a double and a walk.  Marc Newfield had 2 doubles for Florida.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 5, Florida 4, 10 innings
WP- West 1-0, LP- Leiter 0-1
HR- L.Smith (1)

Subject: [SmileyList] Opening Day in Pittsburgh

Waiting on results vs. Chicago for its home opener, the Marlins then traveled to Pittsburgh in a tight road opener.

The contest began and it appeared as though the young Fish were going to knock opposing starter Paul Wagner (6 10 6 6 2 5) out in the very first frame.  After Weiss made the 1st out, Florida loaded the bases on 3 straight singles.  Once Wagner got a 2nd out, Jerry Goff walked to force in the 1st run.  Tim Wallach then delivered a 3-run double to make it 4-0 Florida before the inning wrapped up.  The 4-0 lead was shortlived as the Pirates equaled that total in the 2nd on Don Slaught's RBI single, Orlando Merced's bases-loaded walk, and Jay Bell's 2-run single.

Florida was the only team to score in the middle innings- receiving solo homers from Jerry Goff in the 4th and Greg Briley in the 6th to make the score, 6-4, in favor of Florida.  At that point, Jack Armstrong (5 8 4 4 1 2) had just turned the game over to the bullpen.  Reliever Richie Lewis had pitched a scoreless 6th but left runners on in the 7th that came around to score on a ground ball by Andy Van Slyke and a game-tying RBI single by Al Martin.

The score remained, 6-6, until the 9th inning.  In Florida's half, Benito Santiago singled to begin the frame, but could not advance when the next three hitters were each retired.  Marlins' reliever Bobby Thigpen had cruised through the 8th inning, but in the bottom of the 9th Merced greeted Thigpen with a long drive to right field on a split of 3 (1-5 bp homer) to win the game for the Pirates.

Both teams had 12 hits and 2 walks.  Each team LOB'bed 6.  This was about as even of an opening game you'll see.  The Marlins were led by 2B Bret Barberie's 3-for-5 effort while SS Jay Bell led Pittsburgh with a 3-for-4 game.  Blas Minor (3 2 0 0 0 2) ended up being the key performer in this game as he shut down Florida long enough for Pittsburgh to stage an Opening Day comeback.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 7, Florida 6
WP- Minor 1-0, LP- Thigpen 0-1
HR- Goff (1), Briley (1), Merced (1)
