If this series is any indication, Arena Baseball unfortunately really is here.... Game 2: Each team got 50% of today's total of 26 hits, but one team got 100% of the breaks. Detroit batters got surgical split cards early and often and no feat was too difficult for them to achieve, not even lead-gloved Kirk '4' Gibson in center field making two spectacular catches to deprive Toronto of numerous runs. And "numerous runs" we needed, what with the continuing inability of Blue Jay pitchers to record an out. Starting pitcher Brian Williams was the victim of today's massacre (2.1 IP, 11 baserunners, only 3 of whom DIDN'T score) and middle reliever Gene Harris was no improvement. Closer Duane Ward did record 1.1 perfect innings, far better than he'll do when the game is actually on the line. Final score: 11-5, as the Toronto offense had an off day too, batting only .333. ===================================================== Game 3: New staff ace Pat Hentgen went the distance on a 6-hitter and the offense resumed its normal level (14 hits, 27 total bases). But the Tigers efficiently crammed all of their offense into one surgical inning and we had to come back from a 4-1 deficit to register today's 9-4 win. Robbie Alomar homered (solo) twice and is currently on pace to hit 216 this season, Ed Sprague also homered and delivered 4 RBI, and Joe Carter hit another triple. Carter will lead the league in that category as long as he keeps rolling that HR 1-17, 3B 18-20 on his card, because he's apparently never going the get the home run (missed twice this series and at least one easy BPHR too). With both teams displaying the worst excuses for major league pitching that have been seen lately, the Jays batted over .400 as a team and Detroit's ERA stands at a lofty 9.33 (to our 7.62). Unlikely heroes included SS Jose Vizcaino (9 for 12) and rookie catcher Randy Knorr (went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI in the opener and then hit the bench). The only flop was leadoff hitter Devon White, who has limited himself to the role of glove man so far; good thing he doesn't play a key role in the attack, being merely the leadoff hitter. Alan |
